Thread: SA a magnet for human trafficking - UN

Johannesburg - South Africa's "open, cosmopolitan" society was being used to facilitate human trafficking, a United Nations representative said on Wednesday.

"The fact is that South Africa is being used because of its (technical and travel) infrastructure. Its cosmopolitan society is being used for the facilitation of crime," UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) national project co-ordinator for trafficking Johan Kruger said.

This is an embarrassment to a person to lives here.

Kruger and Engstrom were speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on international co-operation in trafficking in persons and smuggling migrants in Johannesburg.

This does come up in the news a fair amount. it is a problem that exists because both sides don't want to do anything about it. People are bought and sold on a daily basis in some areas.

I thought i would give this another run throungh and see if anyone cares about an issue that does have an effect on us all.

Houston has a trafficing problem with young girls from Mexico, and from Asia. Immigration officials busted a ring not too long ago. They have busted several rings the last few years. In one case that I tried to follow in the news for a while, the ringleader was from Russia. I searched for his name a few months later, and it looked like they just let him go free and return to Russia. I was not happy about that. We seem to imprison the south american ringleaders.

South Africa is the capital of this trade as it has so many poor people. There have been case of family members selling their own to make a profit. This gets lost in the news about Iraq and Iran and Israel. Here is a problem that can be dealt with and it goes unseen by the world.
