Garrett admits aversion to Bush
'Australia would reap huge economic and strategic benefits from this weekend's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit of world leaders, Prime Minister John Howard predicted yesterday.
Mr Howard promised another $70million on regional projects to combat global warming, as he prepared to host Australia's largest ever gathering of world leaders.
However a mixed welcome awaits United States President George W.Bush after high profile Opposition member Peter Garrett said he was "not a great fan".
The swipe creates more friction for Labor leader Kevin Rudd who will have his first private meeting with Mr Bush this week.
Last Friday Mr Rudd rejected a direct plea from Mr Bush to rethink Labor's policy to withdraw troops from Iraq.
Mr Rudd said Mr Garrett's comments would not affect his meeting with Mr Bush and he would not change his stance on Iraq.

Mr Garrett has been accused of muffling his previously strident views on uranium mining and the US alliance, since become a star Labor Party recruit and being appointed environment spokesman.
However yesterday he also criticised Mr Bush's approach on climate change. "In terms of President Bush's policies, particularly in terms of climate change, I think that it's held the world back, frankly, and the great tragedy is that Australia has been a part of it," he said.
