    Pakistan- big terror problem

According to Bush, Pakistan is 'a great ally in the war on terror', yet its dictator has agreements with the Taliban and related tribes. Border regions where Osama Bin Laden surely has his HQ are in control of tribes. A few months ago itr was reported that Pakistan made a peace treaty with Al- Quaeda or Taliban after a firefight costing a dozen Paki soldiers. Then the Prince of Evil Dick Cheney rushed there to turn up the heat and some high level Taleban leader was arrested, for show, I imagine. Now we had the standoff at the Red Mosque and rising tensions between the Tribes and the Paki Govt. If the Paki govt was to be overthrown, the Nuclear weapons we helped Pakistan to get might fall into the wrong hands!
Yet, our King George continues to peddle Iraq as the forefront on the fraudulent 'War on Terror'.

President Musharraf's plane was shot at in flight near Islamabad on July 6. There is also infighting amongst Paki Taliban. It seems many want to attempt an overthrow of the government while others do not. There is also disagreement in the tribe about attacks on civilians. Needless to say, Musharraf could crush the taliban/pashtuns easily if he wanted to. Pakistan has the worlds 7th largest military with approximatly 1,000,000 members.

Personally I think we should be attempting to convince Musharraf to crack down in Waziristan. ~ joebob

So many angry kooks who hate the pak military/government and want hardcore sharia law. It looks really grim, this will go on for a long time. Just look at those madrassas where the kids learn to hate when they're 3. Expect almost daily suicide attacks.

i don't think Mushy chickened out from assasination attempts, i think its more of a stabilization issue. The most hurtful decision he has made in my view was recognizing theological qualifications for parliamentarians (only those with university degrees are allowed to hold elected office in Pak). this was a concession to the Islamists but it opened the door for further Islamification of the government.

Its wrong to assume the military is necessarily for Mushariff. He has their trust, particularly from getting the bomb and his accomplishments in the Kashmir, but they could turn on him and he is probably constantly aware of this.

Certainly he has an extremely capable prime minister in Aziz, a former Citibank banker and probably the driving force behind Pak's economic performance over the last decade. But there is a rift between Aziz (with the higher judiciary and the commercial kabul) and elements of the military, the latter themselves not beyond bombing civilian targets. They are pissed at the comparative concentration of wealth amongst what could be called oligarchs (and not the generals, natch).

So we have a multi-partite battle of wills here betwen the commercialists, the judiciary, the Islamists and some of the military. And Mushariff on top trying to hold the whole fucking thing together. This is just the middle class urbanites - there is a whole other set of issues relating specifically to the regions... i personally have confidence Mushy can hold it, but I can't see what the US is supposed to do militarily...

Our enemy exists in Pakistan, but it is not the country of Pakistan that is our enemy.

True, but many of them are citizens of Pakistan. Mushy has a difficult task and must tread a delicate path so as not to inflame the situation...
