Does gender equality really exist?
As a woman this question arises in my head all the time and every time the answer is no. However, I've been told on several occasions by different men, that we women are just being silly, and that we have already obtained freedom, but because we are so caught up in this feminist struggle, we can't let it go.
I don't believe that this is true.
For instance if I were to marry an Arab and move to Saudi Arabia, it would not matter whether I originally had western values, a job, or a career. My husband will simply tell me, you are in my country now, and now you have to abide by our rules. There will be no debate, and I'd simply have to bow my head and adhere.
Another example, is in my country, a woman has last choice when it comes to employment. If I applied for the same position as a male, regardless of my credentials, the man will get the job instead of me, because it is set up that way in our constitution.
It's astounding how few things have actually changed. Yeah, women have more civil liberties than before, but that isn't worth much if women still have to fight, to stop the violence and abuses against them.
I wonder whether the changes in the last 200 years, can really be seen as the transition to gender equality?
P.S. If this thread is in the wrong category, please move it
But I must warn you, I will take it as a direct insult on my citizenship at PH, and I might just be so hurt, that I'll be compelled to leave :dramaqueen:
