Wednesday's development followed the release in Baghdad of an Iranian diplomat kidnapped in Iraq in February in an abduction Tehran had blamed on US forces.
Iranian state media also said five Iranian officials captured by US forces in northern Iraq in January accused of stoking unrest were expected to receive their first visit by an Iranian diplomat.
US President George W. Bush welcomed the release of the Britons but Washington denied any link to the sudden granting of consular access to the five Iranians held in Iraq.
I don't think anyone other than the writer of this article is confused about what happened. They wanted their people out so they grabbed some random group of honkies and offered a trade. Then staunchly deny all logic and reason until people gert so exasperated they give you what you want.

Rational people simply cannot argue with irration people or people who are prepared to remain deliberately irrational. Why does the West keep getting trumped by these guys?


Although... I think Britan handled the situation the only way they could. Going in guns blazing and killing 15,000 people to rescue 15 was not the answer. The only thing they could have done is waited it out... and either President Carter or Reagan will tell you how popular that is in a Democratic country. Like Reagan... cut a dirty deal and eat it.
