I definitely think so too. India is also another candidate - and the EU might as well if further amalgamation continues.

Re: Will China become the next world power?

The Chinese are potential candidates, especially if they secure uninteruppted fuel supplies from Africa and West Asia. India is the only counterweight to he growing Chinese influence in South Asia.

I really do not think a powerful China is good news for the US, the West or even Asia, for that matter. Japan already has tremendous differences with this country, it is a communist at heart and has set standards to new heights with it's Tibetan occupation. I see a big problem in this. Primarily because though the element of nationalism was present in the invading Chinese, the Tibetans did not or do not feel that way.

But then, it's inevitable. The next world war could be initiated by China.

Negative Ghost Rider. Until China can develope it's own technology it will be a second rate power, like it should be.

China can just as easily steal technology, as japan has been doing for decades now. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

If you consider the generous financial endowments of japanese corporations in american university-based r&d, I wouldn't be inclined to call it 'stealing'.

In the end, the us can only blame herself for surrendering the initiative in the the technology game.

Re: Will China become the next world power?

I'm too lazy type my point of view again. So I'll just copy and paste something I once typed as SimpleSolution.

SimpleSolution: Truth be told, America's hegemony is being tested as we speak by many of your listed nations. I can see China coming out up front, as they are growing back into their former role as one of the more advanced nations. Hopefully with this growth in power won't come a resurgence of the ignorance the once had. Each business that exports jobs into China is one more reason China could become independent from the U.S. and in turn, a rival or even threat.

Canaanite: So, by growing more economically and socially intertwined with the Unites States by importing certain jobs, China is still magically growing more independent of the United States?

Seriously, explain that paradox for me.

SimpleSolution: Well, as soon as enough factories and managers are set up in China, it would be possible under Communism for the government to take control. It would be a risky shift, but as soon as the economy grows enough from American support, it can break off. Still, it is a paradox and China is more of a threat to the Asian world than America.
