China is building it's own subs and Aircraft carriers... they've also hit space... in a globalized world, you do not need to develop every little component. For instance, the US does not even produce it's fuel. Should the ME simply deny fuel, there goes the 'super power'...
China is a superpower already and is growing more powerful daily. But don't forget this is a globalised economy and the US is entirely dependent on China not selling off their foreign currency reserves and China's exports fueling its consumer market. Desidude666 is right to point to oil as the major growth constraint for both China and the US, and the balance of power is swinging toward oil-producing nations. Luckily not many of them have the bomb yet so they can still be threatened physically. But everyone keep their eyes on Russia- they are not out of the game yet. As the world's only nuclear-armed energy exporter, it straddles China (hence the US) and Europe and, holding the energy reigns over each, can steer the world where-ever it wants.
True. Russia is still a threat but many think its an exhausted nation. Actually, it has become more prosperous then the latter half of the Soviet Union, just not as militarized. But they are still one of the powers permitted to hold nukes, and has more untapped fuel in Siberia than any other nation.
And with Russia slipping further toward dictatorship, we might see a revitalized Russia, in addition to China back in power after 1000 years, and there most likely will be clashes between the two, but for the most part, I see a collaboration.
