I was just reading this evening that the British House of Commons has decided to turn the House of Lords into a completely elected chamber. What I find really funny is that people in Britain always talk of Blair being undemocratic and not having a check and balance and calling the House of Lords a rubber stamp. Now funny enough the Brits are saying that this is bad, this will create deadlock, this is tearing away at our democracy.
In my opinion this will actually create a better working democracy in the following ways:
1) it will keep a majority government in line by having possibly an opposition party as the majority in the upper chamber.
2) It will get rid of the fat pompous lords who do nothing but take a nap while legislation is being debated.
3) Political parties will learn to compromise on legislation insteading of ramming it thru parliament, which is what the Blair administration did during the landslide days, 1997-2005.
4) It will create an excellent check and balance, and above all the citizens of the United Kingdom will be elected not appointed.
