In gitmo for a battery charger

Sky News: UK News, breaking news from around the UK.

Ok lots of attempts at emotive shit in this but if you sift through all the little kid wants to know where his dad is rubbish you find that this kids dad is locked up in gitmo because he dared to be in afghanistan with... A BATTERY CHARGER in his luggage.

Now if you would like to inform me how a battery charger is dangerous then do but if you cannot please explain since these appear to be the offical accusations against him that he had a suspicious device in his luggage.

So if it was just a battery charger, why is he still in gitmo?? not only that but it does cast great doubt in my mind on the validity of the charges against many of the other detained men at gitmo.

What a very sad story, Roach - being Jordanian, no clout to get him out. I feel very sorry for him and his family.

Reminds me of the notices in Portugal which said NO electrical devices were to be put in luggage - having a battery charger in ours we thought we'd better check with BA who pretty much said there wasn't a problem.

The Independent pretty much runs the same story but adds the following:

He suffers from severe diabetes, but his lawyers say he has not been offered medication and has been denied the food he needs. His eyesight is now failing.

That's a vague as a story gets, not a whole lot to go on one way or the other. Who know's what was said or discovered when he was questioned about carrying a battery charger on an airplane? One thing I am fairly certain of, they don't keep people at GITMO for four years just because they smell funny, imagine how crowded it would be. Youre right though, I guess it's wise to go on the word of detainees family members.

You have confidence in your government not to hold people pointlessly. I do not, i believe there are too many in the administation that would see it fair to lock up a non american for spurious reasons.

Why is it that there is an uproar about the Americans right not to be taxed for this, or to be allowed to carry guns, or to have a fair trial etc. But a non american is not treated with the same treatment

I have confidence that they have better shit to do with their money and space and personel. I have confidence that there are enough people to hold without just making shit up. Who does it benifit to hold a person for no reason?

America has enough money to throw around to waste money here and there
Im sure they have reasons, but they may not be reasonable reasons. After seeing some of the views on this site i can imagine that they would advocate holding anyone for some very silly reasons or because this person may have been a threat.

You tell us Sparta. It is not on the same planet, but some time ago I told on here how I was stripped and held overnight at San Francisco airport for giving an immigration official lip when I was 14.

I am sure some of you thought I was making it up, coz only one person commented on it, but I wasn't.

So don't tell me that the US authorities would never hold someone, even if only overnight, for no reason. It doesn't have to benefit anyone. All you need is an hysterical population and one nasty minded person.

Battery chargers have been used as parts of explosive devices before. I want to know more about what he said when questioned before passing judgement.

As an American I have always known better than to piss off Custom officials or American airport security personel. Im not saying it's right but It's just a matter of time before you come across somone on a power trip or who's having a miserable day. I used to travel as a service technician for a American aircraft ground suppport company and got held over and harrased plenty of times and this was way before 9/11.
