Russia cuts off oil to Europe; Europe helpless, again

Recently, Russia cut off oil supplies to Europe again, because of a pricing dispute with Belarus (BBC NEWS | Business | Russia oil row hits Europe supply). Though Europe is in no immediate danger because of its reserves, this is another example of the worrying influence of Russia in Europe.

To me, I cannot believe how European politicians today (most of them from socialist/socialdemocratic parties) can be so silly as to not develop energy within their own country, and rely on an unreliable, possibly dangerous country such as Russia. I believe there should be a much higher national investment in nuclear power, so as to avoid the entire dilemma of imported power.

To some extent, I am sure this also applies to America in its business with the Middle East. What are your thoughts?

I agree.. Russia is not a country we should count on.. to start with, you can't call Russia a democracy.

As long as we, the people, won't accept to drive electric cars, oil will be needed. In my country, 88% of the electrical production is nuclear. So it's really only needed for cars.

lol, yep you lucky bastards!! although we're connected now so perhaps we can slowly just phase out all our powerstations and leech off yours lol

But yeah, Nuclear is the way to go with ordinary electricity. Hydrogen technology if they can ever actually get it functioning for cars would be good but i think for now electric or hybrid cars. Perhaps electric hybrids running on ethanol.

That would leave oil left for making plastics!

Tss typical english, they won't enter the EU until it proves better than their current market, they won't adopt the euro before it proves better than their currency, and they connect to us just to leech off our electricity! And what do you offer in exchange? Spice Girls and green poodles! What a deal!

    Ha ha ha!

The French-English rivalry is so amusing.

Yet I agree. If other European countries could be more like France with nuclear power, we would have less problems. Even Switzerland uses nuclear power.

I do not like Schroder in Germany. He is East German, pro-Russian, eager to import from Russia and not develop his own country. Now he is not Chancellor anymore, and he works for Gazprom (Russian state gas) in Moscow. It shows for whom he really works.

As for the EU, I do not really like it, though Austria cannot leave it now. It must be reformed; it is too expensive (especially agriculture) and it ends national authority. I think it should be mostly free trade and police co-operation. I can understand if the British do not want to join now.

Ok that's official now... war has been declared!
See you on sunset behind the townsquare Mr Roach, you'll choose the weapons.
And as some French officers said to the English army, illustrating the class and savoir vivre between France and England at that time, "Mister the English, fire first please!" (that's true!). Politeness or maybe they knew English wouldn't be accurate enough to hit an elephant in a corridor

Oh goody, I love talking about the Napoleonic wars - mainly coz we won just about every battle and you lot helped the rebellious colonists in America to commit high treason. Revenge is a dish best served cold!

But did you know that the Battle of Trafalgar was won long before Nelson engaged Villeneuve? The Royal Navy had kept the French fleet bottled up in port for so long that its sailers had grown fat and lazy, while the British tars had been at sea continuously and kept fit and highly trained. One of the consequences was that the Royal Navy was able to fire at least three broadsides to every one Villeneuve's gunners could get off. So even though the Royal Navy was outnumbered by the French and Spanish ships, it had firepower superiority, and that, allied with 'crossing the T', gave the Brits a huge advantage.

But Waterloo was 'a damned close run thing' as Wellesley was heard to remark after the battle. The French cavalry charges were absolutely amazing, and at one stage they captured all the British artillery. It was just that the French forgot to bring along the nails necessary to 'spike' the cannon, and that indirectly lost them the battle. The British mounted a counter charge with their own cavalry, regaining the undamaged guns.

Without artillery, the British would have lost long before the arrival of the Prussians. The French fought courageously and magnificently, as they have always done (despite claims to the contrary by present day Americans), and it should be remembered that Napoleon did not conquer half of Europe, and get as far as Moscow, all by himself.
