You can buy home owner's insurance after your house catches on fire, though it won't cover that fire or prior ones. You can also continue not having home owners insurance and fix everything yourself.
You can buy car insurance after you've been in a car accident, though it won't cover any accidents prior. You can also continue not having car insurance and pay for accidents/damages yourself.
Therefore
You can buy health insurance after you've gotten sick, though it won't cover your current sickness or any prior. You can also continue not having health insurance and pay doctor's/hospital fees yourself.
Its called Freedom of choice. Its also called SELF-RESPONSIBILITY, something WAY TOO MANY people in this country have abandoned.

Nah, see, that's the scam. You can not actually do the bolded part, at least not in most States. You MUST show proof of insurance before they'll let you register your car. Some strange coalition between little old ladies and the insurance lobby - but that's the way the law is written, in most states. Our gubmint has made insurance mandatory! And, it's been challenged lots of ways in court, and they've come up with a few work-arounds like posting huge private bonds or something, but the whole deal is, our gubmint COERCES us to buy insurance! It's THE most basic form of statism, it's the very PROTOTYPE in this country.
