Now that the Democrats are in charge of the Legislative Branch, if they want to move our Country in a positive direction and, in the process, restore decency and integrity to the Executive Branch in 2008, they must not attempt to “pay back” the Republicans for past treatment. It’s hard to stop oneself from wanting to even out the score and deny the same courtesies and respect that the Democrats had been denied, but they must keep their collective eye on what’s best for all of us, not just what feels good to them.
The Democrats must not launch retaliatory investigative committees meant expressly to embarrass the Republicans. They must seriously consider Executive initiatives and not reject them out-of-hand. They should appoint competent Republicans to leadership positions on some committees. In short, they must show that the future of our Nation is more important than any paybacks.
Bipartisanship, conciliation, and a concerted effort to work together with the Republicans to further the agenda of our Nation, not just the desires of any particular political party, will serve all Americans as well as the interests of the Democratic Party. ..And if the Republicans should assume the same stance, it would serve them well, also, in my opinion.
Selfishness and super-partisanship is a political disease. It is the biggest threat to the function of our government and our Nation, as it feeds on itself and is self-perpetuating. It’s the most important hurdle we must leap. The Democrats are in a position now to take the high road and be the first to put an end to it.
It’s time for our lawmakers and the rest of government to return to an attitude of bipartisanship and conciliation in order to move forward. Certainly, exactly where that move “forward” should be is subject to appropriate and necessary debate, but the tone of those debates should be courteous and productive and should stick to the issues. I don’t think I’m overstating it when I say that only the future of our country hangs in the balance.
