It seems to me that whenever someone mentions 9/11 a ton of people have some pretty awesome stories to tell.

Myself, I was in Ireland on the third day of my homeymoon. My wife and I had just completed the "highlight" of the trip, a stay in one of the top rooms at the Ashford Castle. We had both just received full body massages and were getting in the car for our first other-side-of-the-street driving experiences. We drove hesitantly for about 15 minutes and decided to stop at a convenience store prior to getting on the national road (we were driving across the country to dublin that day).

There was a little 9 inch tv sitting next to the counter. I'm not really quite sure what went through my mind but I was staring at the tv when my wife walked up to me. There story doesn't get much better than that... we drove for ten hours listening to the same station but unfortunately there weren't many details over there at first. Watching tv in the piece of shit hotel over there that night one thing I'll remember is that the images shown to us over there - atleast over there - were significantly more graphic than the ones over here.

We spent three days in Dublin. The second day there Ireland calls for a Day of remembrance. While the Irish have very very strong ties to NYC, especially the police and fire forces, to this day I can't recall seeing a group of people so concerned for others. literally everything was shut down. My wife and I only had room service to depend on (which had like two things on the menu). Even gas stations were shut down. I gained a ton of respect for the Irish that day, had the positions been reversed and the US had shut down everything, Americans most certainly would not have shown the same universal consideration.

We were there for another week and a half. We were somewhat fortunate in that the day we were flying back was really the fist "normal" day of flying since the tragedy. Granted, the airport was a total clusterfuck or epic proportions, all things considered we didn't mind at all. When we landed that evening and everyone broke into a cheer it was the first and only time flying when folks applaud when landing that I didn't want to punch everyone in the face. It was a pretty funky day for sure.

I was in Houston, my home town and was staying with a friend the evening before for work. We were called and told not to come and to go be with our families. I made the trek from N. Houston to S. Houston (not fun or a quick trip) and by the time I had made it to my side of town I had already run into some of the most frantic people I've ever seen. It wasn't absolute chaos but there was no normalcy and fear clung in the air. I got to my father's house and he was on edge and we sat together watching the news and hoping that the attack was over. At around 5pm Tower 7 came down and I thought that it was all starting up again only to find out otherwise.

When I was young I thought floods were cool because of what I got out of it. I got to stay home from school and play in the rain. Same thing when I was sick, I got out of my responsibilities legitimately and it was okay to do nothing. On 911 I wanted to do something. I couldn't work, I couldn't go have a good time, I couldn't do anything while all I wanted to do was head to NY or DC and help people. I felt quite helpless and terrible that I could do little other than wish.

I was assisting in surgery. One of the circulating nurses came in and whispered in my ear what had happened and that security was allowing entry to the hospital only through their ER control point. Her voice was normal but she had tears in her eyes.

    It was a miserable day.

Nothing to share really, just watched tv all day and listened to npr for the next 8 weeks. Much like mjollnir, I was married to a dirty whore that I'm not with anymore.

I was a freshman in college at the University of Maine in 2001.

I had gone to my 8AM class that morning, but I was sick (hungover) and decided to leave class early. It was still the beginning of the semester, so whatever I was missing wasn't too important.

As I was swiping my key card to get into my dorm, a kid from my floor approached me and asked if I had heard about what happened. He told me some idiot had crashed a plane into one of the twin towers. His casual tone led me to believe that someone in a twin prop was trying to buzz the building and miscalculated. No big deal.

My roommate was still asleep when I came back into the room, so I silently put on the TV. When I saw the smoke pouring out of one of the towers, I knew it wasn't a small plane that hit.

I woke my roommate up and we both watched as the second plane hit. We didn't move from our couches/beds for the next 18 hours as we watched everything unfold.
