Given the vast population of immigrants in the United States and the fact that 5% of the voters do speak very little English, if none, I encourage our Congress to pass a resolution which allows the information of public American institutions as well as services funded and provided by the Government to be translated into Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, etc. That way everybody who is a U.S. citizen or a legal resident will be able to understand what their Government is up to. Many people lack the time and means to learn English and it would be a discriminatory act to marginalize them because of the language barrier.
I heard in many States the Naturalization test is done in several languages. I think education should also be in Spanish and Chinese at least to guarantee that all those people who can’t speak English get acquainted with the basic cultural knowledge that is needed to succeed in this world. The decadent view that English is the only language of the U.S. is predominantly held by old-fashioned Republicans, and some pedantic Democrats, who want to close the borders to avoid any foreign penetration. But their time is almost over in this free market economy. Do as the President says: “Learn more about foreign cultures”. And teach your children to speak a foreign language at least. That’s a good way to give them a head start.
