it's only right that we ask everyone to pay their fair share

National Taxpayers Union - Who Pays Income Taxes?

    Using 2009 as an example, I like this year as it was Obama's first year in office, when "asking everyone to pay their fair share" became the feed they put down for you liberals to graze on. Let's take a look;

Top 1% paid nearly 37% of all federal income taxes.
Top 5% paid nearly 59% of all federal income taxes.
Top 10% paid nearly 71% of all federal income taxes.

The top 50% paid nearly 98% of all federal income taxes.

Nearly 50% of income earners.....paid any tax at all.

And we're "asking" for more fairness? I would seriously like one of you from the Left side of the ledger to tell me how this pie should be divided more fairly, assign numbers to the top 1, 10, and 50% of federal taxes, show us all what is really more fair.

We already do pay our fair share. Incomes at various levels are taxed at higher rates. But Bill Gates pays the same rate on his first ten grand in income that a working poor person does. What's unfair about that? Was Bill unaware that making more money would subject him to a higher marginal rate, as it would any working poor person who increases their income?

Obama was talking about paying your fair share on an individual basis. Let's start with Willard Romney paying a higher tax rate than I do. He sits on his ass and makes more money in one day than most of us do in a year.

I don't think anyone making poverty level wages should pay taxes. Hence the 50% of income earners that paid no tax at all. Nice post though.

The Religious Right is often neither.

Racism is alive and well in the Tea Party. You're either with them or against them.

    A fair & simple question:
Divide it up exactly the way it was under Bill Clinton when everyone did well, including the rich. (I don't know the numbers off the top of my head so ...do your own homework.)

Unlike you, I did do my homework, my link includes the last year Clinton was in office, 1999. I assume you mean 1999, or were you just "joking?"

33% on capital gains, 33% on anything over a million. No loopholes. That ought to be good for starters.

How would you fill in the 1, 5, 10, and 50% numbers, would just take a minute for you to suggest some numbers.

I don't have the time to make myself an economist, but someone who is could find the right number. We need to get realistic about our debt and if we can't stop spending, we better tax enough to pay for it. We've been been overspending better than $1T a year, so we need $1T more until we figure out how to rein in the spending. I'm not saying I want to spend more particularly... I just want to stop borrowing... and we can't stop borrowing unless we tax enough.

Also, we're all citizens... so we all have an obligation to pay into our government. That means to me that if a 1% across the board tax increase was enough, that we could all share the burden, poor included.

I thought something like that, but then I realized that the 1% is included in the next group (5%) and so on. My coffee didn't kick in today.
