    Should Homemakers get Social Security

As everyone knows, working in the home is very legitimately acknowledged as "work." However, those who choose to do this work do not receive the same reward from society as those who go to offices or wait tables.

Is Social Security a good way to compensate for this discrepancy?

If you answered yes, what kind of "salary" should the SS payments be based on?

the only problem I see with this is that SS is based on what you have paid in over the years. How does a homemaker contribute directly to SS? Im not saying that they dont deserve some sort of compensation for what they do but it is hard to figure out what they should get when they dont put anything in.

they do not put in any monetary form of something... but they do the work that is necessary to keep a house running... which deserves at least respect... i dont know how or why they should be compensated by ss :?:

Personally, I think SS is a sham. It is a program that was created with good intentions but has become a social welfare program.

Im against it in any form.

    My two cents

    ss is not a sham

the wrong people who abuse it are crooks... ss is just fine how it is, its the people who dont use it as intended

The people? You mean the fed?

SS is a sham. Anytime you have a fund that can be accessed for anything the government wants without regard for the long term results it is a sham.

Let me ask you, how old are you?

I am 26, and I will not see any of what I pay in. How is that not a sham?

grated, ss needs a bunch of reworking, and anything that politicans think they can fix with, usually will screw it up even more..

and im at the age of 18..

and you will see benefits from it, maybe not what you pay in, but you will see something out of it, because of how it is structured

    Care to explain that theory?

Or is that just your opinion?

In theory, it should work just fine but I have to agree wth Zman on this. If the government keeps dipping into ss moneys to fund other things, it will never work right and by the time we are old enough to draw out, it will be depleted. Retirees nowadays already have to keep jobs untill thier death just to make it by b/c ss is not enough. You dont actually believe that the door greeters at Walmart are there b/c they have nothing better to do, do you? If homemakers were allowed to draw from ss, that would just be another injustice to the people who pay in. If it were allowed it would cause one of two things to happen. Either the generation that were drawing from ss would have to take a cut out of the little that they already recieve in order to make up for what the homemekers are drawing out or the generation paying in and supporting the retirees will get stuck footing the bill by having to pay more in than we already do.

now zman, i never said how much benefits you would see from it

but in reality, what bm said, about the gov dipping into the ss funds, yeah, that will definitely help the screwing over of ss...
