Romney: 'Barack Obama has failed America'

Romney: 'Barack Obama has failed America'
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press – 50 mins ago

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mitt Romney is opening his first formal day as a 2012 Republican presidential contender with a direct challenge to the man he wants to replace and is pitching himself as ready to repair the nation's struggling economy. "Barack Obama has failed America," he says.

In excerpts of a kick-off speech released ahead of his formal announcement Thursday, Romney's campaign message homes in on the economic woes that top voters' frustrations: a lack of jobs, persistent foreclosures and runaway spending in Washington.

It's a pitch tailored to the conservatives who hold great sway in picking the GOP's presidential nominee in Iowa and South Carolina — and the independents who are the largest politic bloc in New Hampshire. And it is as much a thesis on his viability as it is an indictment of Obama's leadership.

America had failed before Obama got there. When republicans will be honest I will vote for them again. Admit that Obama started with a shit sandwich and they don't agree with his policies to correct it. Then provide better alternatives and they got my vote.

Tax cuts for the rich just doesn't cut it.

I think Romney has a good chance of beating Obama. Especially if the economy is the #1 issue in the election. Not if Ryan's plan becomes the #1 issue in America. People think of Romney as a good businessman, an economy guy. But people overwhelmingly hate Ryan's plan, and Romney has (kind of) supported it. I think.

I also think Huntsman has a good chance of beating Obama, b/c of crossover appeal. But not if he tacks hard right in the nomination process. Which he appears to be doing, somewhat. Again, he has come out in support of Ryan's plan, and people hate Ryan's plan.

    Romney is correct.

Hey, sure Obama got a shit sandwich...but what did he do with it? He only spread the shit over everyone. His policies have put us deeper in debt. He and his buddies, Pelosi and Reid have taken more control over the People...and the People don't like it. The only solution for our Nation is for Obama to be booted from Office and the Democrats to be relegated to a minor Party. We can't afford their Agenda...not as a Nation and not as a People.

I don't like Romney all that much, but he's a damned sight better than Obama.

I don't think this assessment is correct, and more importantly, I don't think the American people think this assessment is correct:

    Democrats Can't Relitigate 2008

A presentation from pollster Stan Greenberg shows voter confidence on jobs and the economy shifting from a 38 to 46 percent advantage for Republicans to a 42 to 41 percent advantage for Democrats, but concludes that "Democrats need a forward-looking message for 2012, and can't try to relitigate 2008," according to Politico.

Said Greenberg: "Paradoxically, Democrats must forget the past and the financial crisis. That is counter-intuitive and painful because conservative policies were so destructive and Democrats did right and brave things. Voters understand this more than you appreciate, but that is at least three years ago now, and voters think a focus on that misses the country's urgent current reality. They want to serious plans, not triumphalism about jobs reports."

They're not. People know that the modest benefits the not-extremely-wealthy got were a bribe, and a small one, to get the massively tilted to the 'haves and the have-mores', who were Bush's base (to use his words).

Tax Cuts Offer Most for Very Rich, Study Says
    By EDMUND L. ANDREWS
    Published: January 8, 2007

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 — Families earning more than $1 million a year saw their federal tax rates drop more sharply than any group in the country as a result of President Bush’s tax cuts, according to a new Congressional study.

The study, by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, also shows that tax rates for middle-income earners edged up in 2004, the most recent year for which data was available, while rates for people at the very top continued to decline.

Based on an exhaustive analysis of tax records and census data, the study reinforced the sense that while Mr. Bush’s tax cuts reduced rates for people at every income level, they offered the biggest benefits by far to people at the very top — especially the top 1 percent of income earners.

Because they didn't amount to a hill of beans? I would rather have skipped them and reduced the deficit.

Tax Burden Shifts to the Middle

    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Friday, August 13, 2004; Page A04

Since 2001, President Bush's tax cuts have shifted federal tax payments from the richest Americans to a wide swath of middle-class families, the Congressional Budget Office has found, a conclusion likely to roil the presidential election campaign.
The CBO study, due to be released today, found that the wealthiest 20 percent, whose incomes averaged $182,700 in 2001, saw their share of federal taxes drop from 64.4 percent of total tax payments in 2001 to 63.5 percent this year. The top 1 percent, earning $1.1 million, saw their share fall to 20.1 percent of the total, from 22.2 percent.

Over that same period, taxpayers with incomes from around $51,500 to around $75,600 saw their share of federal tax payments increase. Households earning around $75,600 saw their tax burden jump the most, from 18.7 percent of all taxes to 19.5 percent.
