When did you become political and why?

When i was 16. I started to follow the LGBT movement and saw how we were being treated. since that time i have been politically active and worked in some campaigns. i had a great mentor who was in the original gay pride movement the (GLF). it helped me to follow and activist.

my awareness grow over the years and my vote felt more valuable to me.

i became displeased with the politicians in the US when Bush was in office. it was made worse when i felt betrayed by Obama in his lack of support to the LGBT movement and the fact that he did not remove the troops from Iraq on day two of his presidency.

i believed that the US would never change and let the country so my disdain is evident.

when did you become interested and active?

It's hard for me to pin it down, I guess in my later teenager years I really started getting interested. Some of my extended family are very political, my grandfather has been a CCF/NDPer for much of his life, and some of my relatives were active in the environmentalist movement in the 80s, and my Dad has volunteered for the NDP in the past. I think when I moved to Victoria I became more aware because many of the said political relatives live here. Not to mention that I started taking college courses in things like poli-sci and history.

I wrote my first letter to my congressman when I was nine. Mostly, for me, it was about sitting around the dinner table listening to people talk about politics.

My parents were not very political, though they have the news on tv at dinner and stuff, so I'm the most political and politically aware out of my family, though I don't make an issue of it. I am the most liberal out of my immediate family, perhaps with the exception of my sister.

I started watching cable news sometimes, and I guess that started my initial interest, even though I rarely watch it anymore. I became increasingly interested, and in the process, have drifted further and further left, to where I am today, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Contrary to AgentM, I started to get interested in history prior to politics, and will major in it when I go to college.

Personally, I think it's a shame that more people my age aren't politically aware. I'm not trying to sound to full of myself here, but it's common knowledge that my age group is among the most apathetic around. In 2008, we saw more people involved, in a positive reaction to Barack Obama. I'd like to see this continue.

i had similar experiences when i lived in NY. I was living with an activist and her partner. she was very active in many movements. she inspired me to push for what i believed. i did that. she encouraged me to get in the news field which i did for a number of years. her political banter around the dinner table was addictive. her partner was an ACLU attorney. so i got it from both of them. i became an activist in self defense.

After I joined the Air Force back in 1984. How politicians vote and what they do in office has a very direct impact on those serving. That is where watching voting records is definitely more important than the rhetoric.

Actually, I should amend that. I took one 1st year poli-sci course at the community college I went to, and had a bad experience with the instructor, so I avoided poli-sci for a while till I found out that they had another instructor who taught poli-sci. So I started taking poli-sci courses with him in second year I think, and got more into the poli-sci field.

I read newspapers a lot back in middle school but I didn't become political until I was about 12, which was solidified a couple years later when Bush Jr. was elected and again when my suspicions that he was a fascist were confirmed after 9/11. Ever since, I've been continually pissed off reading the news, which is how you know you're a politico.
I have close friends who are atheists.
In the main I find them thoughtful, well-educated and generally happy.

I can see how that would have done that to you. to experience the Bush era at such and early age. how long will you have the PTSD symptoms?

I assume it's permanent. An open wound doesn't heal.
