No Don't Ask Don't Tell but No Benefits Either

Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, one of the groups in the lead of fighting to overturn Don't Ask, Don't Tell, said the Justice Department's announcement does little more than narrow its actions regarding DOMA. The department is not pulling out of cases it already joined, he said; it's just not going to defend it moving forward.

But extending spousal benefits to same-sex couples in the military, he said, "is an inequality that should be addressed."

"We're going to begin to have conversations about this in this Congress," said Jarvis, an Army veteran and former chief counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee. "But I think it'll be awhile for this disparity to get the attention in needs.
DoD: No Spousal Benefits for Gay Partners

Nutshell: If your in a Civil Union, married, whatever, you don't have the benefits offered to straight couples. My only problem with this is, whats the point of repealing DADT if thats the case? They're basically saying "Sure, we're all equal here... but not your family."
"This is revolution in the making
A ragtag movement set to takeover the nation
    Now isn't that fun?
You just wanna make the world better, isn't that young?
Well, blessings to the youth then
And don't stop, until they let the truth in
Once there, never let it leave
And protect it, they'll catch it and never set it free" - Lupe Fiasco "The End of the World"

There are lots of reasons to repeal DADT not the least of which is that one can no longer be thrown out of the military if someone else tells.

    Baby steps, dear. Baby steps.
As a Democrat, I take solace in the fact that the Republicans have nominated the guy who lost the nomination to the guy who lost the presidency to the guy who is now the President.

This needs to be addressed now. Look how long it took to repel DADT. It's unfair to the families to wait another 20 years.

I completely agree with civil marriage equality being extended to all citizens, including those serving in the military. It wasn't baby steps that brought civil rights to our country. It was courage and vision.

And a determination to make things right. I firmly believe government has no place in determining what a marriage or a union is other than insuring that all are treated equally under the law.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a good policy. Anything that prevents people from joining the U.S. regime's imperial stormtroopers should be considered a positive.

Considering their own plight at the hands of the U.S. government, gays should be embarrassed to want to join an organization dedicated to oppression and destruction around the world.

No, what they said was that there is still "defense of marriage act" which makes marriage only recognized as being between a man and a woman. So, once that law is changed, then they can change the benefits for gay couples, as it stands they are following law. This is as it should be. (by this I mean, the military should follow laws, not make them) So, for rights activists, DOMA should be their next target.
When it comes to GOP stupidity, there's no need to make stuff up.

Good point. Thanks for clearing that up.
