DoD: No Spousal Benefits for Gay PartnersAubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, one of the groups in the lead of fighting to overturn Don't Ask, Don't Tell, said the Justice Department's announcement does little more than narrow its actions regarding DOMA. The department is not pulling out of cases it already joined, he said; it's just not going to defend it moving forward.
But extending spousal benefits to same-sex couples in the military, he said, "is an inequality that should be addressed."
"We're going to begin to have conversations about this in this Congress," said Jarvis, an Army veteran and former chief counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee. "But I think it'll be awhile for this disparity to get the attention in needs.
Nutshell: If your in a Civil Union, married, whatever, you don't have the benefits offered to straight couples. My only problem with this is, whats the point of repealing DADT if thats the case? They're basically saying "Sure, we're all equal here... but not your family."
