It's been "wrong" for quite a while. Every census since 1850 has asked about race, although until 1890, the term used was "color."

Here's the 1890 census form. Look at question #4. Also consider questions #16 and #22 if you want to feel violated.

First of all, the question is totally unscientific. Might as well ask people what kind of tree they are. I'm not sure when we should have stopped asking the question, but it's clearly wrong now. We are supposed to be a melting pot, not a segregated sock drawer.

Why are we against segregation and racism, but reinforce segregation and race tracking in our census?

We've been at this long enough. By continuing to focus on race, you reinforce divisions. The rights have been won. Time to move on.

Consider this... Today, are black people more likely to be routinely pulled over without cause? If so, an understanding of the demographics where this sort of profiling takes places would be useful in addressing the problem.

According to U.S. law, they can ask pretty much whatever they want, and U.S. citizens are required, by law, to answer the questions fully and truthfully.

So I get my census form in the mail and I'm a bit surprized at the questions. They want names, race, DOB. I don't feel comfortable filling this thing out, anyone else feel that way? Is anyone going to flat refuse to mail it in?

I gave them all the info they needed. 2 People live here and we don't stay anywhere else.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong? I boldfaced the words that make my point. In addition, the clause "to the best of his knowledge" prohibits deliberately false answers.

    (a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
