Burning Giraffe and I are in disagreement on the subject of Palin. Below is the debate:

Absolutely. I think Palin has a lot more common sense than Bush or Obama. She's no academic, but she'll surround herself with them. Again, what I love most about Palin is that Democrats underestimate her, make fun of her, mock her. It'll make it a lot easier for her to beat Obama on the issues, she'll get tons of sympathy from women, people living in rural areas, and even some Independents.

    Gypsy, on 08 March 2010 - 06:43 PM, said:

Not sure if you've noticed ... she doesn't get any sympathy from the ladies here. She is playing the big boy's world (just like Hillary) and if she is going to do so she better be tougher than the guys. I don't want a President I feel sorry for. You also need to keep in mind that we know she is a quitter. Doesn't matter what she did before ... in the end, she quit and that never sets well with the rural folks.

Burning Giraffe, on 09 March 2010 - 07:43 AM, said:

You aren't understanding. She gets sympathy from women because she is tough and because the insults spat at her are unreasonable and vicious. Now, this is a generalization, which means it doesn't apply to all women, only a majority. I believe that as she continues marching forward, despite all the vicious attacks, her approval rating will rise to around 55 to 60%. Which could be enough to help her win a few important primaries (just not the first three, which could really hurt her). I despise the US primary system. I think every State should vote on the same day. So Palin's presidential hopes will be linked to who else runs that will pull votes away from her niche.

    Gypsy, on 09 March 2010 - 08:20 AM, said:

No, you aren't understanding. Just because she lacks a penis does not mean that the majority of women will sympathize with, let alone vote for her. You are underestimating most women and overestimating Palin.

    The process is the process/

Does Palin being a woman determine/influence your vote?

Does Palin being a woman automatically garner your sympathy vote?

If you live in a rural area does she automatically garner your vote?

    Thanks!

I dont know where he is coming up with admiration for Palin but even the Republican party knows she is a no winner. She is a great deal responcible for Obama's win because of the fear of what would happen if McCain died in office. And that will happen all over again in 2012 if she wins the nomination.

Im a democrat, I was early on an Edwards fan, and switched to Obama. So as a woman, I didnt pick Hillary JUST because she is a woman.

And as a women, Im actually offended that anyone would insinuate that I would vote solely for a woman because Im a woman.

which means it doesn't apply to all women, only a majority

What kind of proof do you have that backs up this statement ?

Your conclusion is that the majority of women will vote for Sarah Palin because they feel sorry for her ?

I think you are way off base and out of touch with modern women. By far my experience is that women are most toughest on other women.

Im not a Sarah Palin basher but Id say she has put herself on a platform where she gets what she gets because she invites it. She LOVES it. She plays the media for it.

Im just highly irritated at the thought that any man would think like this.

I think to some degree she gets both advantages and disadvantages for being a woman. The right likes the fact she's pretty, has 5 kids and isn't a "feminazi" although her gun toting redneck woman persona has weird sexual undertones for conservative males I think.

The left continually points out that she's not particularly brilliant, which often makes them look like they are picking on her because she's a woman. The press even the most liberal parts, still have some growing up to do about women in politics as we learned when Hillary was running.

Palin is Obama part 2 or Election of Historical Proportions Part 2.

We are bombarded with this progressive checklist stuff all the time, on sports, in the movies, in journalism.

Now that the black president box has been checked off, the female president box is the NEXT BIG THING. I think it's embarrassing to the media and the intellectual establishment that they have been massaging the population in this direction for a century and that a hick, right winger might take advantage of their set-up. So she must be destroyed.

Obama was no more qualified in 2008 than Palin will be in 2012.
    August 28, 2008 - Obama nomination speech

"let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am president...I'll eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and start-ups... I will cut taxes...many of these plans will cost money, which is why I've laid out how I'll pay for every dime..I will also go through the federal budget line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work"

On behalf of women in this part of the world (which I'm not one of, just to be clear), I've never met any who sees Sarah Palin as anything other than a joke. This could be influenced by my circle of friends and the fact that we only notice her when she's said something funny.

I'm having difficulty finding anything recent, but I found one poll from October that shows Palin having lower approval ratings among women than men:

    Opinion of Sarah Palin

Favorable - 37% of women, 45% of men

Unfavorable - 51% of women, 50% of men

And here's another from last July, comparing Palin's and Romney's chances against Obama in 2012. Romney scored better for both women and men, but the difference was bigger amongst women.

She being a woman does influence my vote and I'm man enough to admit it. Just as if she were Indian, Black or whatever. I do think that whether we like it or not being a different gender or race does bring with you different life experiences or perspectives and I like to consider these things when forming a holistic opinion on candidates.

FWIW there was a TON of "it would be nice to see a female in the white house" from Hillary supporters, especially early on - so the phenomina definitely exists. I don't know what magnitude it exists, but I would venture a guess it's statistically significant.

For example, here's a random googling and the comments are basically what I'd expect. Most folks saying they'd vote for what is best for their country but a lot of people obviously who are acknoleging gender ==> http://blog.womenforhire.com/2008/02...ary-jus-1.html

Weird sexual undertones? She a hottie. There is nothing weird about that. I think because she is a hottie it works against her with many women... you know how women can be... especially those women that haven't aged as well.

See, I am actually offended that anyone would insinuate that I would vote for an attractive woman because I am a man. I'm happy to talk about her on a message board, but that doesn't mean I'd vote for her. Her political views are one thing, but the fact that she had 5 kids is a question mark... were they natural or C-section? That is an important consideration.
