Palin casually mentions that her familiy commonly travelled to Canada to get medical treatment. Taking her brother to get treatment in Whitehorse, Yukon Ter. Also casually drops fact that many people in Alaska do it.

WASHINGTON - Sarah Palin's weekend admission that her family once travelled to Canada to receive treatment under the public health-care system she's so often demonized prompted skepticism and ridicule Monday among her critics in the United States.

Oh God this is glorious. Proof that God loves us.

Republicans battling against health-care reform have long claimed that Canadians flood the U.S. to get health care because of waiting lists north of the border.

But Palin's experience, if accurate, reflects what some studies suggest is a more common trend: Americans travelling abroad to get cheaper care.

A report last spring by Deloitte Center for Health Solutions said 750,000 Americans travelled abroad for medical care in 2007, and forecast that number would rise to six million by 2010. That trend far outpaces the number of Canadians coming to the U.S. for medical treatment.

Americans have been going to Mexico and India for years now for elective stuff. Much cheaper and many of the docs are American educated. My VA doc is from India.

"Believe it or not - this was in the '60s - we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing, and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn't that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada."

So Sarah Palin says that they went to Canada for health care 40 years ago, eh? You don't think it's possible that something might have changed in 4 decades?

Yes...I'd guess that what has changed is that American HC has gotten even more comparatively expensive since then.

CHA was implemented in 1984.... I have no knowledge of the HC system individual Canadian provinces had in the sixties. I'm thinking the Palin family went to Canada because it was the closest available medical provider (I mean, we are talking '60s Alaska here), not some disingenuous attempt to get "free" health care....If it was even "free"...which I doubt. I'd like to see some more research on the story before I completely discount it as yet one more attempt by the progressive boots on the ground to destroy opposition with strawmen and red herrings.

I have no problem with Palin receiving Canadian medical care back in the 1960s... She was a child, and she was subject to the decisions of her parents at the time. The more telling issue is that she's not criticizing or condemning her parents' decision to seek medical care across the border.

Federal medicare legislation became effective in 1968. I simply don't have it in me to see what the non-Province of the Yukon was offering at the time.

But really... all I have to do to shoot Palin down in flames is remind her that a government death panel didn't interview her brother to see if he would be permitted treatment. No government official decided what treatment he would get or by whom. A free person in a free nation and paid for the service of their choice by the provider of their choice. Just as they do day in day out, and have done ever since. Just as I do when I'm sick.

I don't have to sell medicare as a good thing to make Sarah Palin look like a lying sack of shit. I just have to show the real world as it is... and remind people of what she told them it was.

You can't really compare whatever the system was in Alaska and Yukon 40 years ago to today. I have no idea what it was like... maybe it was 50 miles to the hospital in Alaska or 25 miles to the hospital in Canada for her back then. I think you can make good arguments against Sarah Palin, but this is not one of them.

One time, when I was five, my parents took me to my Aunts house. "Uncle Jane", as we lovingly referred to her, was a lesbian...a rather husky, flannel shirt, pocket knife on the hip wearing one at that. During this era, homosexuality was quite frowned upon in our circles, and I was told to never let out our family secrets...and I didn't, until years later. I often wondered if harboring this "dirty little secret", told to me when I was five years old, would preclude me from holding public office...I'm beginning to think, since I would have naturally opposed progressive ideology, as I do now, it just might.

Now, WTF does all that have to do with this strawman, red herring Palin story? She was fucking five years old.
