America moving ever closer to authoritarian control

    National socialism, here we come

S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US.

“If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public’s right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes.

It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one’s choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law..."

    ...

Monsanto says it has no interest in the bill and would not benefit from it, but Monsanto’s Michael Taylor who gave us rBGH and unregulated genetically modified (GM) organisms, appears to have designed it and is waiting as an appointed Food Czar to the FDA (a position unapproved by Congress) to administer the agency it would create — without judicial review — if it passes. S 510 would give Monsanto unlimited power over all US seed, food supplements, food and farming.
    History

In the 1990s, Bill Clinton introduced HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) purportedly to deal with contamination in the meat industry. Clinton’s HACCP delighted the offending corporate (World Trade Organization “WTO”) meat packers since it allowed them to inspect themselves, eliminated thousands of local food processors (with no history of contamination), and centralized meat into their control. Monsanto promoted HACCP.

In 2008, Hillary Clinton, urged a powerful centralized food safety agency as part of her campaign for president. Her advisor was Mark Penn, CEO of Burson Marsteller*, a giant PR firm representing Monsanto. Clinton lost, but Clinton friends such as Rosa DeLauro, whose husband’s firm lists Monsanto as a progressive client and globalization as an area of expertise, introduced early versions of S 510.

I guess if Americans didn't act like children (collectively), we wouldn't have 1/2 these problems.

It's funny, I have a few threads that lead up to this, one of our mods gets beef from a neighboring farmer, the dems think all is fine, yet as the title suggests, we are moving toward an authoritarian "government", and food or the basic god given right to produce, trade, give away, or chose what types of food you may wish to have will be taken away.

I thought this thread would get ire from the left, but other than a couple of stupid comments, I see that they have little concern.

Personally I feel they should teach all in school to grow basic foods.....Althought I do believe that the FDA should be split and more jobs created in these areas.

You are very right. Reminds of me of an old prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr - "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference".

In 1930's Germany, the people who stepped up to the plate relative to part (b), were the National Socialists. No one else had the balls to do anything about the corporations that were raping the country and its economy. Hitler brought them to heel, and got them working for a common purpose, and it got him elected to a position of power, and the rest is history. The Jews came later - much later, when the corps had already been tamed, and Hitler as a politician needed a scapegoat to keep his "base" together.

This scenario is not far-fetched at all, especially considering how 50% of the Republican party bought into Bush's redefinition of the word "torture", and cheered him on while he did it. It's not the torture that matters though - it's the attitude of a pissed off population, and how far they're willing to go to make the trains run on time.

And meanwhile, the anger is distracting them from important issues like this one, which by itself is merely a tiny blip on the radar screen, almost unimportant - but taken together, laws of this type have become a pattern and that is very dangerous. And they combine all the worst elements of Amerian politics - lobbyists, money (lots of it), corporate greed, and corporatism on a national (or global) scale.

Yes I notice how the left is eerily quite on these type of issues.....unless it can be made into a racially social epitat.

if this is the same bill that mike has brought up in the past then its been determined that that is NOT what this bill would do.

the government would never pass a law that says you can't have a garden in your backyard.

Maybe, maybe not, some states require a permit, and with that permit comes inspections and regulations. They say it is because you might grow pot.
