    Capitalism or Socialism

Poll: Capitalism is better than socialism
    Published: April 9, 2009 at 8:42 PM

WASHINGTON, April 9 (UPI) -- Just over half of Americans say they believe that capitalism is a better economic system than socialism, a U.S. poll indicates.
The Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 53 percent of Americans say capitalism is better, while 20 percent said they believe that socialism is the better system. Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they are not sure which is better.

The poll found that adults under 30 are evenly divided on which system is better, while adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism.

Republicans, by an 11-to-1 margin, said they favor capitalism. Among Democrats, 39 percent said capitalism is better, while 30 percent said they prefer socialism.

The poll's sample size and margin of error were not reported.

"It is interesting to compare the new results to an earlier survey in which 70 percent of Americans prefer a free-market economy," Rasmussen said in its analysis. "The fact that a 'free-market economy' attracts substantially more support than 'capitalism' may suggest some skepticism about whether capitalism in the United States today relies on free markets."

Anyone have an idea why it's dropped so much? Paranoia? Laziness?
What do you think is better?

It all depends on how you are going to define socialism. If you were going to try and find a truly socialist govt it would probably be the former Soviet Union. If you define it as such you are not going to find many saying socialism is better. If you are going to conduct your poll under the definition that a country is socialist if it has something such as a Universal heath care plan than I'm sure you will find many to label as socialist, but they aren't and your poll would not be worth the paper it's printed on.

A capitolistic country with predominately an open market system with a few social programs does not a socialist country make.

Did they explain to these pollsters what was to be considered "socialist"?

Simple, the government has interfered so much, forced so called free trade down our throats, and have created many problems within the financial sector, that the dumbed down public get that concept confused with capitalism. It is anything but, if is financial dictatorship with corruption.

See people do not read anymore, the governments media tells them capitalism does not work, and as I said, they don't understand it, they believe the liars.

I think the current definition of Socialism is anything Obama does.

I think Bush is every bit the socialist that Obama is. That said, I think people need to learn the term fascism. We might have some socialistic things happening, we always have, but this country is a fascist/socialist authoritarian state. I do not blame Obama per say, but in all honesty, he is continuing the path, and it appears that he is and has accelerated the process. This is not what America is or should be about.

Is Rasmussen really so ignorant on science? I don't think I'll ever respect a Rasmussen poll after this. It is not interesting to compare these results to an earlier poll that asked a different question. Because now you have two independent variables: The perception of free market vs. capitalism and time. If the two polls were done at the same time, or asked the same question, you may get an interesting result. As it is, you cannot tell which factor caused the change in opinion, and so it's not interesting at all. I thought these people were supposed to understand the basics of science. Reducing an experiment to a single independent variable is one of the first things you're taught in 5th grade science.

So there are republicans that actually support socialism?

It also stands to reason that as people get older they get more conservative.

With that being said however, I think the poll doesn't mean shit until you start look at trends which can only happen over time.
