Two-thirds of GOP blame Obama for recession

Fox News viewers more misinformed than most about health care reform; support for reform drops without public option

Nearly two-thirds of Republican supporters believe President Barack Obama is to blame for the recession that began in December, 2007, according to an opinion poll from Rasmussen Reports.

Among the general population, 39 percent say President Obama takes the blame for the economic downturn, while 55 percent blame President Bush. By comparison, in May, 27 percent blamed President Obama, while 62 percent blamed the former White House resident.

That suggests a slow but certain change in the electoral attitude, as President Obama begins to “own” the economic state of the country.

I think most economists would agree that neither person is ultimately to blame

I blame Obama for his mishandling of this meltdown. He has done everything wrong unless you one of his bankers or handlers. The GOP is playing the partisan game, and that could backfire, but that would take guts as most of this problem is a result of free trade agreements, and both parties starting as far back as Reagan supports these deals.

They should have listened to Perot.

Is this the same group that ran a cranky, unfocused old guy with a vapid low level pol for a running mate in 2008?

Blaming Bush or Obama exclusively for the present condition is stupid. Of course, they both have spent us into oblivion and deserve contempt. The blame not only includes them, but extends far past those two idiots.

A simplistic point of view blaming a president for a recession, or giving them credit for a booming economy for that matter, reveals a complete lack of understanding. Yes, I am looking at all the people that point to Clinton and the dot com growth years as the good old days as well as present day GOP members.

At most a President can fan the flames one way or the other. In the case of Bush and Obama they didn't fan the flames, they poured gasoline on the fire while laughing maniacally. BOTH of them.

I think that to blame either of them is kind of false. It is congress that is also as responsible if not more. They have to draft and sign the bills as well.

Presidents may agree, or even have a signature legislation but the congress have to agree or it doesn't go anywhere for the most part.

There is more than enough blame to go around.

I don't know how 2/3rds of Republicans can be stupid enough to blame Obama for the recession. They're dumb, but not that dumb. I would guess many of them blame him for the recession getting worse.
