So the surge of Afghanistan has begun. The military has pushed into the Helmand region. The town they are fighting for has been heavily booby trapped. Five NATO soldiers are dead three of them are US military. There is something I find very disturbing in the article I have read about it. Look below:
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE61B1ZJ20100213
"...Marines in helicopters landed in Marjah district, the last big Taliban stronghold in Helmand province, in the first hours of a NATO campaign to impose government control on rebel-held areas before U.S. forces start a planned 2011 drawdown.
They fired at least four rockets at militants who attacked from compounds near the bazaar in Marjah town. Hours later, the area was still gripped by the firefight...."
so we think we will accomplish something there by telling the enemy that we will fight for a year or so and then start removing our troops? What do you think they will do? They will do just what they are doing now in this battle. They will fight and kill some US soldiers and retreat and boobytrap everything and probably they will get the idea of killing some locals in the process and blame it on the US.
So this is our plan? It sucks!
