What the Democrat Stimulas Billing Really Contains

Curtesy of Senate Minority leader Boehner

A Dozen Fun Facts About the House Democrats' Massive Spending Bill
    1. The House Democrats' bill will cost each and every household $6,700 additional debt, paid for by our children and grandchildren.

    2. The total cost of this one piece of legislation is almost as much as the annual discretionary budget for the entire federal government.

    3. President-elect Obama has said that his proposed stimulus legislation will create or save three million jobs. This means that this legislation will spend about $275,000 per job. The average household income in the U.S. is $50,000 a year.

    4. The House Democrats' bill provides enough spending - $825 billion - to give every man, woman, and child in America $2,700.

    5. $825 billion is enough to give every person living in poverty in the U.S. $22,000.
    6. $825 billion is enough to give every person in Ohio $72,000.

    7. Although the House Democrats' proposal has been billed as a transportation and infrastructure investment package, in actuality only $30 billion of the bill - or three percent - is for road and highway spending. A recent study from the Congressional Budget Office said that only 25 percent of infrastructure dollars can be spent in the first year, making the one year total less than $7 billion for infrastructure.

    8. Much of the funding within the House Democrats' proposal will go to programs that already have large, unexpended balances. For example, the bill provides $1 billion for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which already have $16 billion on hand. And, this year, Congress has plans to rescind $9 billion in highway funding that the states have not yet used.

    9. In 1993, the unemployment rate was virtually the same as the rate today (around seven percent). Yet, then-President Clinton's proposed stimulus legislation ONLY contained $16 billion in spending.

    10. Here are just a few of the programs and projects that have been included in the House Democrats' proposal:
    • $650 million for digital TV coupons.
    • $6 billion for colleges/universities - many which have billion dollar endowments.
    • $166 billion in direct aid to states - many of which have failed to budget wisely.
    • $50 million in funding for the National Endowment of the Arts.
    • $44 million for repairs to U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.
    • $200 million for the National Mall, including grass planting.
    • $400 million for "National Treasures."
    11. Almost one-third of the so called tax relief in the House Democrats' bill is spending in disguise, meaning that true tax relief makes up only 24 percent of the total package - not the 40 percent that President-elect Obama had requested.

    12. $825 billion is just the beginning - many Capitol Hill Democrats want to spend even more taxpayer dollars on their "stimulus" plan.

This is a massive boondoggle we will be crawling out from under for years if it is not stopped.

This scratches the surface, remember 700 billion is 8.5 trillion, now redo the math. You will see that there is plenty left over to continue the Bush policies of moving us further into fascism.

You are leaving out how in a recession an economy is not as efficent as it would be when it has full employment. Therefore, even if defecit spending or defecit tax breaks will increase our national debt if it brings us out of the recession faster then we may still save money over the long run.

But that completely depends on the spending and the recession that we are in.

    So this isn't inherently bad.

    2. The total cost of this one piece of legislation is almost as much as the annual discretionary budget for the entire federal government.
WWII had huge spending, and that brought us out of the Great Depression. So this isn't any inherent flaw.

    [/quote]

Saving jobs isn't its only goal. It also will try to increase standard of living for Americans and increase consumption. Those aren't nescesary parts of job growth but will still help the economy.

So the "fact" is partially shortsighted. Its not the whole truth.

    4. The House Democrats' bill provides enough spending - $825 billion - to give every man, woman, and child in America $2,700.

    5. $825 billion is enough to give every person living in poverty in the U.S. $22,000.
    6. $825 billion is enough to give every person in Ohio $72,000.
The problem with number 5 is that if you give handouts only to the poor then that means that it gives them less of an incentive to increase their income.

For instance, in Europe their welfare is targeted for everyone so people get to "keep" all of their increased income when they make it.

Simillar to the stimulus plan that just gave money to everyone in America, people ended up keeping it instead of investing it in the economy. So a simply handout may not work.

    7. Agreed, that is a problem. But as long as the spending is for "investments" if they are job training or research for alternative energy, then the effect will be the same as infrastructure.

    8. Much of the funding within the House Democrats' proposal will go to programs that already have large, unexpended balances. For example, the bill provides $1 billion for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which already have $16 billion on hand. It seems like that you are only naming some of the recipients of the money... only the ones that seem like a mistake. If your analysist isn't going to be objective and tell all of the sides of the story then it is irrelevant.

    9. In 1993, the unemployment rate was virtually the same as the rate today (around seven percent). Yet, then-President Clinton's proposed stimulus legislation ONLY contained $16 billion in spending.
lol are you saying that the level of a recession is equal to its unemplyment? We really are in the worst recession since the Great Depression and it will only get worse. Large amounts of tax cuts or spending is needed, but that doesn't mean that every bill is helpful.

    10. Here are just a few of the programs and projects that have been included in the House Democrats' proposal:
    • $650 million for digital TV coupons.

    • $200 million for the National Mall, including grass planting.
    • $400 million for "National Treasures."

lol digital TV coupons. The rest of it is small change or important. It is just a mistake in too much mismangament, but not a poor choice for spending.

    11. Almost one-third of the so called tax relief in the House Democrats' bill is spending in disguise, meaning that true tax relief makes up only 24 percent of the total package - not the 40 percent that President-elect Obama had requested.

You are over exagerating about the damage of this bill.

But I do agree that there should have been more tax cuts.

As your post noted, 22,000 for every person living in poverty, they say they want to promote an economic stimulus but that could best be achieved by just handing the people the money instead of supporting their elitist friends. Not that I approve of either. Lets face it, our country is run by a bunch of crooks and liars.

I don't think it was "left out" but then it is not the issue here.

Therefore, even if defecit spending or defecit tax breaks will increase our national debt
The first will the second will prevent it.

if it brings us out of the recession faster then we may still save money over the long run.
Not if it is spent as this program is geared towards. Social spending and "infrastructure" which will have forseeable impact as CBO reported yesterday.

But that completely depends on the spending and the recession that we are in.

    So this isn't inherently bad.
That's the point, what it is being spend on, and the fact it will be fiat money IS inherently bad.

WWII had huge spending, and that brought us out of the Great Depression. So this isn't any inherent flaw.
    So let's start a war?

    That is not the goal.

As does most welfare spending, but it illistrates just how much money it is and it would cost us less to just hand it out.

Simillar to the stimulus plan that just gave money to everyone in America, people ended up keeping it instead of investing it in the economy. So a simply handout may not work.
Where did they "keep" it under their mattresses? But agree it was a bad plan then and a bad one now.

Agreed, that is a problem. But as long as the spending is for "investments" if they are job training
Job training for jobs that aren't there is a good plan? There is plenty of available job training out there. This is just another term, another easy means for politicians to look like they are doing something.

I recall reading back during the Carter recession similar plans and I think it was the Heritage Foundation that reported how were were 'training" somthing like 250,000 beauticans and hairdressers a year at taxpayer expense when the economy only need about 65,000.

It seems like that you are
Read the top of my post, this is the Senate Minority Leader not me.

lol are you saying that the level of a recession is equal to its unemplyment?
It is certainly a measure of it's effects, are you saying it is not?

We really are in the worst recession since the Great Depression
    Facts no in evidence.

and it will only get worse.
With dumb plans like this it certainly will.

lol digital TV coupons. The rest of it is small change or important.
    $650,000,000 is small change?

Right? Where did you get that idea. We are discussing the Democrat proposal and whether it is in the best interest of the country and the economy and whether this scheme will work at all.

This is what is coming up for a vote.

well i bring it up because unless the republicans don't think anything is needed, all the "points" about how much money this bill would cost the taxpayers, or how much equivalent money could just be handed out to americans, are specious, because ANY spending bill could be broken down the same way.

now the other points are valid ones, but republicans are being included in this discussion, so thats a good sign. it should be noted that there are some economists who are actually saying this bill is too SMALL, which is interesting.
