    Smoke Nazis at it again!!

Search Results - THOMAS (Library of Congress)::

The Childrens Health Insurance Program Reauthorization act of 2009. It is a social program that insures uninsured kids. Paid for....by tobacco smokers ONLY!!! What the fuck kind of discrimination is that? It stated firmly that funding for this socialist program will be by increasing the tax on not only cigarettes but roll your own tobacco. And with roll your own tobacco, the increase is from $1.0969 per pund to $24.62 per pound! These motherfuckers are out of their minds!! How can they get away with taxing one segment of the population? So that means that we punish the smokers because somebody has a child that they can't afford to feed or insure.

    It's even worse than that.

Illegal aliens will have access to the new SCHIP expansion.

    Paid for by US smokers.

    Hm.....

You see it as taxing "one segment of 'the population."

I see it as taxing a proven carcinogen.

If people stopped smoking, our healthcare system could improve for everyone. Since we can't force people to stop smoking, why not at least derive revenue from it to help everyone...including the guy who needs an iron lung.

This is one example of a situation for which I say, "go government!"

I have to agree with Davo on this. If the government is going to pick up the tab on this, it may as well be through the taxes of what costs the healthcare industry so much.

The main contingent arguing against this are: nicotine addicts! Imagine that!

    Wait, wait, stop.

Illegal aliens are getting SCHIP benefits, paid for by US smokers.

    What's wrong with this picture?

Goddamit, if I'm gonna be paying taxes for OTHER COUNTRIES, I wanna be represented in those countries.

    NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.

If they want me to start payin' for their health benefits, they gotta give me a seat on the Board of Directors. Otherwise, no deal.

You do realize what this means, right? A new black market in cigarettes, that's all. All those little discount mom-and-pop Armenian cigarette stores where there's "no tax stamp" on the discount cigarettes.... did you ever wonder how those places stay in business, considering they never seem to have any customers?

Your valid beef is with SCHIP, not the sin tax.

On the other hand, I tend to feel like "illegal aliens" are not ambassadors from their country of origin. Our immigration laws are vague enough now, that you could never prove "taxation without representation" in paying tax on tobacco.

But SCHIP is SOLELY funded by these tobacco taxes. That is taxing a segment of the population! Smoking is a ritual that's as old as time. Why are these do gooders so fucking interested in it now? Oh, by the way, the risks of using tobacco have been known since the use of it began...don't say it's because of what we know about smoking. It is governmental behavior control...an effect of socialism.

True. I have no beef "in principle" with a sin tax.

I just find it very annoying how these weasel politicians keep setting up these "compromises" that seem to hurt the American People.

I mean, you know how this happened, right? They needed more money for SCHIP, and they had to get it from "somewhere", and so.... hey! Lookie here! An untapped source of revenue!

So, it makes the politicians look good, but really, it does hurt the American People, in TWO ways: one is, taking away their "pursuit of happiness", and the other is, making them PAY for someone other country's medical and economic problems.

Look - I got nothin' against globalism "in principle". BUT, I don't want to have one foot in one world, and the other in another. These guys are playin' both ends against the middle right now, and the result of it is that the American People are getting RIPPED OFF.

Seems to me, the guiding principle in this matter, should be: NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. That seems to me to be a very sound starting point when considering this situation.

I mean, see, Thomas Jefferson predicted this a long time ago. He basically said that the guvmint would eventually need money, and the only way they're gonna get it is by taxing you, so they're just gonna try to tax the hell out of everything they can get their hands on. So, what you want to do, is MINIMIZE the stuff they have to do, so they can't get their hands on "much" without people screaming bloody murder. MINIMAL government, right? LIMITED powers.

Yeah, I got a big, BIG f'in problem with our idiotic government pissing away our money on indigents. Two things: one is, I've been paying into their goddamn disability system for FORTY YEARS, and last year when I needed ONE WEEK of disability they told me I couldn't get it because of some stupid technicality or other - so, at that point, I told 'em right to their face, "no more money for you". The second thing is, MY health insurance is paying for treatment for those people, and the way this system is set up today, if I'm out of a job for 6 months (COBRA time) and I happen to get sick, I am SCREWED. No one will give me insurance, no one will hire me because the insurance is too expensive, and when I show up at the hospital they won't treat me 'cause I'm "NOT POOR ENOUGH". And I mean, you won't know what this means till you wake up one morning vomiting black stuff and unable to hold down a glass of water. And then to have the hospital tell you that ordinarily they'd keep you overnight and put you on banana bags till you felt better, but just at the moment there's "too many poor people waiting for treatment".

I got no problems with treating poor people for free. But then, I wanna get treated for free too. So, if we're all gonna get treated for free, then fine. But don't make ME pay for some other asshole's treatment, and then tell ME I can't get any. THAT don't work for me.

And I mean, if you're a smoker, this equation should make a GREAT deal of sense. Which is why I say, the net effect of this law will be to REDUCE government revenue, because most smokers will simply move over to the black market to buy their cigarettes. No one in their right mind would pay ten bucks at pack a the 7-11, when they can go two doors down and get it for five.
