    A trillion dollars........

President-elect Barack Obama's first act in office will be to push through what is expected to be an $800 billion economic recovery plan.

The stimulus package, combined with the $7.2 trillion the government has invested or loaned in the past year to combat the financial crisis, will add greatly to the federal budget deficit.

"Potentially we've got trillion-dollar deficits for years to come,“ Obama said Tuesday.

Obama's plan would feature spending on roads and other infrastructure projects, making government buildings energy-efficient, building and renovating schools and adopting environmentally friendly technologies.

Tax cuts would be aimed at middle- and lower-income taxpayers, and aides have said there would be no tax increases for wealthy Americans.

In addition to spending on roads, bridges and similar construction projects, Obama is expected to seek additional funds for numerous programs that experience increased demand when joblessness rises. Among those programs are food stamps and other nutrition programs, health insurance, unemployment insurance and job training programs.

    A trillion dollars………..

That's 12 zeroes to the left of the decimal point, $1,000,000,000,000. . A trillion is a million - million dollars.

If you laid one dollar bills end to end, you could make a chain that stretches from earth to the moon and back again 200 times before you ran out of dollar bills!

One trillion dollars would stretch nearly from the earth to the sun. It would take about 8 seconds to traverse it at the speed of light.

It would take a military jet flying at the speed of sound, reeling out a roll of dollar bills behind it, 14 years before it reeled out one trillion dollar bills.

.....Man, that's a lot of money. Someday, and I mean SOON, this bill is gonna come due.....

C'mon Mike, Bush racked up 6 of these trillions during his tenure. Obama is just following the advice of the economists with regard to increased spending to mediate the recession with his proposals. Albeit there are no guarantees it will work.

I'm surprised the bushbots aren't really getting behind Obama's tax cut and spend proposals. Everybody is screaming he's going to raise taxes. You and I both know that spending is going to have to be curbed at some point and revenue's increased. Yet Obama has proposed keeping Bush's cuts until they expire in addition to adding his own. Plus spending on a massive building/infrastructure program. He's not talking about tax increases, yet. He did mention though an initial burst of spending followed by fiscal restraint and specifically mentioned spending changes in Social Security and Medicare and he wasn't referring to increases. Only a "liberal" Democrat could get away with saying that and perhaps even getting "reform" done. So now Obama is making me nervous and not because he's too liberal.

As for Reagonomics, it has been pretty throughly proven you don't increase government revenues by giving tax cuts to the rich (socialism) and placing the finance burden for the nation on the middle income and working poor (capitalism, with appreciation to Mare T for her initial use of this concept here).

Six trillion my ass, 8.6 trillion just in the last couple of months, and the sis trillion.

I agree, I have no idea why Bush supporters are not elated over the Obama victory, hell four more years.

Problem with Reaganomics is it really never happened.

Irrespective of this the economy will limp along for a while. The global "correction" will come in approximately 6 years. At least that is what some guys who a economics gurus say. The term "correction" is ecospeak for collapse of the currency markets.
