Mackey wrote an op-ed last week that stated, “The last thing our country needs is a massive new health care entitlement that will create hundreds of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer to a government takeover of our health care system.” Apparently, this has created a large boycott of Whole Foods, and the company is concerned.
He also had an 8 point plan, including these four:
-Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs).
-Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing across state lines.
-Enact tort reform to end the ruinous lawsuits that force doctors to pay insurance costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
-Revise tax forms to make it easier for individuals to make a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to help the millions of people who have no insurance and aren’t covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
I think the boycott is a highly reactionary thing to do, considering that Whole Foods is a shining example of everything we want to see in a corporation. They have high standards on what products they sell, which must include humane treatment of animals and environmental responsibility. They also pay their employees well with great benefits. While their customers may not agree with Mackey's opinion on health care, the least they could do is rise up and transcend the reactionary politics of the Republicans, and accept his opinion with disagreement. But no, they are going to fuel the fire set by the nonsense coming from the likes of Sarah Palin.
