Also dealt with them as management. When I worked in Chicago the contract was coming up. I was a production superintendent and worked directly for the plant manager. We were talking about it and I asked if he thought there might be a strike, the union was getting the members all fired up. He told me no there would be no strike and that the wage increase would be this percent and the contract would be accepted on the third vote.
Sure enough the members elected their floor reps and they and the shop stewards and the union business managers went into the meeting with the company management. After a while they came out with an offer and got the members all fired up and said this is crap and we ain't gonna take it, so they voted it down. So they all went back in and after a while came out and the union said we're not gonna take this we're not gonna let them do this to you don't vote for this we're gonna fight for you , so they voted it down and they went in a third time and this time the union came out and see what we got you, now we've stuck it to them, this is a good deal vote for it and so they did.
And the members never knew the union had negotiated the contract before talks ever began, the terms had already been set.
