Well the last few days I have seen the depth and importance of a first black president to the black community. To me it appears to be mostly symbolic. After all we have had several black person's in high positions and it was just a matter of time until a President was black. It was inevitable. And for me race is not a consideration in my life. I can afford to live as if I am colorblind.
And when Obama talked about being elected he announced that it was the proof that "change has come," it is finished. I am glad that that paticular change has come and now we can officially move on from slavery and be done with it.
Personally, I would have liked to have recognized that all the black congressmen, and Colin Powel and Condoleeza were examples of change (but if they are Republicans then I guess they don't count.) I would have liked to have recognized the evidence of change in the success of Bill Cosby and Oprah and a hundred thousand other success stories.. And personally I would have liked to have seen the change come without resorting to electing a man who is as close to a full fledged socialist as we have ever had in the white house.
But that is not the way that many others viewed it. Many others in our country felt that this gain was worth the cost. I have no doubt that a great healing will be accomplished. I had felt we were already there in reality even if it was not obvious to all, but many others did not think it was here. They poured their hearts and finances into this campaign for Sen. Obama and it paid off. That is a part of the American way. Effort is rewarded.
So we will have on healing and I fear we will have some other setbacks. I really fear for the other setbacks. There have been other moments in American history where we have had setbacks and we are still recovering from them or still suffering from them. This country is not one our founding fathers would recognize. And this I believe even though P.E. Obama said that the dream of our founders is alive as evidenced by his election. He must have had different founders than James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Our liberties everywhere are in jeopardy and some even have the audacity to call this loss of freedom a benefit.
So we have a new President and he is mine and yours. For the last eight years we have seen an incessant attack of smears against P Bush that did not respect the office, that took criticism to heights more appropriately called treason. It was effective but it was wrong. That is not the American way we should ascribe to.
So I am not happy with the choice we have but I will respect the office even amidst my own criticisms. I will speak out against what I do not agree with but I know that it is important to remember always that if we do not want our enemies to view our country as evil then we should not call our president evil without some firm support. I remember reading an advice column once in which a women wrote to Ann Landers or whoever and told how when she and her husband were going through a divorce she confided in her friends. But then when she reconciled with her husband her friends hated him and it was causing her pain. If you don't want people to hate your husband then don't say bad things about him. It is important that criticism be kept reasonably civil. It is a hard line to walk but the examples of the last eight years help to make it pretty easy to see what not to do. Not for our President the man and his ideas but for the office and the fact that it is a symbol of our country. Some of you have not understood why it is important not to trample on the flag or to burn it. Maybe now you will understand why it is important not to trample on the office of the President either. They are both symbols and just as you respect the whole country you respect the symbols.
I am glad for the healing that will come with this presidency. There will be other good things that come with it and I will be glad for those too.
Together we learn to read and write.
