Obama says he didn't know aunt's illegal status

CHICAGO (AP) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Saturday he didn't know that one of his relatives was living in the United States illegally and believes the appropriate laws should be followed.

The Associated Press found that Obama's aunt had been instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya. The woman, Zeituni Onyango (zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh), is living in public housing in Boston and is the half-sister of Obama's late father.

A statement given to the AP by Obama's campaign said, "Senator Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed."

Onyango is part of Obama's large paternal family, with many related to him by blood whom he barely knows. Obama first met Onyango when he traveled to Africa as an adult -- he referred to her as "Auntie Zeituni" in his memoir.

The campaign said he has seen her a few times since that meeting, beginning with a return trip to Kenya with his wife, Michelle, four years after the first trip. Onyango visited the family in Chicago on a tourist visa at Obama's invitation about nine years ago, the campaign said, stopping to visit friends on the East coast before returning to Kenya.

She attended Obama's swearing-in to the U.S. Senate in 2004, but campaign officials said Obama provided no assistance in getting her a tourist visa and doesn't know the details of her stay. The campaign said he last heard from her about two years ago when she called saying she was in Boston, but he did not see her there.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, noncriminal violation of immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the U.S.

According to Federal Election Commission documents filed by the Obama campaign, Onyango has contributed $260 to Obama over a period of time. Under federal election law, only U.S. citizens or green-card holders are legally permitted to give money to campaigns. Onyango, who listed her employer as the Boston Housing Authority, gave in small increments to the Obama campaign. Her latest contribution was $5 on Sept. 19.

Hard to believe that someone who lets his brother live in a mud hut in Kenya would allow his own beloved auntie to live in crime-infested Democrat Model City of the Proletariat Future....er public housing.

What's not credible is his claim that he didn't know she was there. But he sure didn't do anything to help her get a green card. And he didn't do anything to let the authorities know that she was here illegally.

Obama is lying AND he allowed one of his family (I believe that there are more of his family in squalor, though) to live in squalor.

He thought if he made waves that it would come out sooner and so he did nothing and kept her "hidden."

No matter what candidate gets elected, the people living in squalor will still live in squalor; the Middle-Class will either stay the Middle-Class or dip down to Lower-Middle-Class.

But now Obama has a dilemma: use his power to get his aunt her legal status or, as Obama says, let the authorities take care of her and possibly deport her per the law.

This is magical. He runs against Hillary for like two years and nothing surfaces, suddenly, under the Republican machine, you have Ayers... his aunty... and what the heck... the unicorns too!

I don't think it's the Aunty I'm interested in, I am interested in his leadership. I don't think his aunty funded his education, attended his marriage, played a major part in him growing up...

If no, are Americans that stupid to fall for the usual Republican nonsense of 'character' over policies. I am surprised that his 'past' is still exploited as a political tool. Let's face some things straight, McCain, with all his heroics in Nam, wasn't the most clearest of characters either. He has an equal number of political shades in the past as Obama, if not more. He wasn't caught in Nam for competency, he was an incompetent pilot, a near bottom student of 800 plus people.

Are you seriously thinking that this candidate is worth it? If not for anything else, I'd vote for Barack just for the sake of youth in the office. Republicans have bloody *failed* in office for two damn terms - and the usual Karl Rove tactics are at work again, just for the sake of a real sucker punch to the political show stealers, I'd like to see Barack walk it and prove himself.

I don't know about you but in my logical world, two attempts at something that results in losses means that the third one needs a complete change. Are Americans really that stupid to vote the republicans back into the Oval Office after two terms of complete squaller...

I sincerely hope not.
