(AP) (Glen Campbell, PA) A teacher’s aide is challenging her one-year suspension without pay for wearing a cross necklace, which officials say violates a Pennsylvania Public School Code prohibition against teachers wearing religious garb.
“I got suspended April 8, 2003, for wearing a cross to work and not being willing to either remove it or tuck it in,” said Brenda Nichol, 43, of Indiana County.
well looky there.
thats interesting. to be honest, i can't remember if my teachers wore visible crosses or not.
and i'm one of the biggest seperation of church and state people i know, and even i think thats crossing a line. i wonder if a muslim teacher would be able to wear a headress then? or if a jewish teacher could wear a yamaka? that DOES seem like a violation of religious freedom.
i mean with a cross, the teacher should just tuck it in. there is zero reason for it to be visible. but you can't tuck in a yamaka.
