Running Alaska like a high school clique

WASILLA, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Witnesses and contemporary news accounts say Ms. Palin asked the librarian about removing books from the shelves. The McCain-Palin presidential campaign says Ms. Palin never advocated censorship.

But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.

“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,” Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it.”

    Dumbass.

And to think, this could be the first female President of the United States. Really sets the standard huh?

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm picking up on Palin too.

    Moralist streak a mile wide.

Makes perfect sense - dovetails perfectly with everything we know about her.

Hmm.... yeah, the more I think about it, the more I don't want a moralist hockey mom as Vice President.

Yes, I agree. And I agree with Burning Giraffe. McCain can win this. We've done stupid things in the past. I never dreamed we'd have anything as stupid as two GW Bush terms.

    Americans love simplistic moralistic morons.

I think Governor Palin has the potential to be a political force in this country for a long time, so long as she doesn't buy into the hype about herself, stays grounded, and stays focused. She's not the next Reagan, but she might be the next Gingrich.

    Oops. Too late for that.

She's not the next Reagan, but she might be the next Gingrich.
And we know how well that worked out.

Really, BG. You talk a good game about personal liberty. But you espouse authoritarianism. And aren't you an atheist?

I smell cognitive dissonance. ...or cynicism. It's hard to differentiate sometimes.

Well, you know.... how can I say this.... this is the woman, who's gonna come into your room and "clean it up" for you - only, she doesn't know what that little project is that you've been building, the one that's on the floor, with the little chassis with all those electronic parts arranged around it and wires danglin' out of it and such -

See, so, she's gonna be NICE about it too - she's gonna take all those parts and arrange 'em all for you - on your DESK instead of on the floor, right?

See, so, when you get home from school, you're gonna realize, that those three hours you got up early that morning, to build that project that you couldnt' "quite" get done in time to go to school, so you had to just leave it sittin' there till you got back..... that project, now needs to be re-built, the whole thing needs to be started over from scratch - and not only THAT, but now you gotta spend an EXTRA half hour, trying to remember where you were and how you got there.

    See? THAT's a well-meaning moralist hockey mom.

    Good comment

Sorry, I just wanted to point that out. We just really need to watch out for not thinking about a decision as much as we should when our options look incredibly bad.
