    John McCain Could Win

Senator Barack Obama’s attitude toward his opposition is currently his biggest obstacle in this campaign. He has angered and alienated the vast majority of Republicans without being for anything substantial enough to secure broad moderate support. In 2004, Senator John Kerry lost because he ran as a Democrat for the Presidency, instead of as an American for America. President Bill Clinton understood this distinction. He ran on the Economy and delivered a feel-good brand of politics we haven’t seen since. Never underestimate the power of humility and happiness in a candidate.

John McCain is running as an American, on a Country before Party platform that actually inspires moderates. This may not be enough to allow McCain to overcome the fact that after eight years of President George W. Bush, the country is ready for a real change. If Senator McCain can succeed in reaching across the aisle, reaching out to independents, and distancing himself from President Bush, I think he has a very real shot at winning in November. The fact that, with the entire country sick and tired of the Republican Party, Obama is still not way ahead of McCain in the polls is a remarkable failure for the Obama Campaign.

Democrats don’t seem to have any humility at all. They act as though Republicans are all just a bunch of stupid, unintelligent hicks. This doesn’t help the Democrats. All this does is galvanize the Republicans against Obama. This is what McCain has going for him: people voting against Obama, people voting for Governor Palin, and people voting for John McCain. Whatever those numbers add up to be, its going to be enough to keep this election close to the last minute.

Nice op-ed. Can't say I agree though. The main issue is still the presence of Neo-Cons in the McCain campaign. When it comes right down to it on voting day, people are going to remember George W Bush - 'cause remember, he said ALL the same things McCain's saying right now. And look what happened.

Nah, that's the whole problem for McCain - the Republican Party has lost its credibility. They're not a party full of idiots - they're a party full of LIARS, is what it is.

All this "country before party" stuff is BULLSHIT when you're pulling truth out of thin air and making up reality as you go along.

Don't tell me those Neo-Con idiots care about my country - they're DESTROYING my country, is what's happening. They're turning my country into a bunch of brain-dead Kool-Aid drinking SHEEPLE that would sooner trust some talking head on Fox News than their own Constitution!

And then these MORONS wanna get on their soapboxes and preach to me about right and wrong. Imagine that.

Sorry, I ain't buyin' it. Today's Republi-Cons are mostly whining moralists, and between the whole lot of 'em there's not enough guts to remove ONE menace from their OWN tent. And then these fools wanna try to convince me they're gonna go up against the Russians? Ha!

Sorry - Palin is NOT the issue. Those no-good dirty stinkin' Neo-Cons are the issue. The LIARS are the issue.

Until they get rid of the liars, how the hell am I supposed to trust anything McCain, Palin, or anyone else says?

George W Bush (may he rot in hell) has been lying to me for EIGHT YEARS IN A ROW, so, what evidence do I have that any of that is going to change in a McCain presidency?

The thing I hate most is that Democrats would rather us be losing the war in Iraq, rather than admit things are going well, because of political matters. Democrats would rather believe that drilling in the US won't mean a single thing towards gas prices, but a hurricane can raise it 2 dollars in the span of a couple days. And the fact that democrats continue to wan't a more socialist govt really scares me. Dems want to increase the fed govt defecit by ten fold in order to create national healthcare, one of the worst ideas ever (and I'm quite happy to give you many reasons why).

If you can't give Bush any respect whatsoever, the one thing you can give him is balls. He stood up for his decisions no matter what. He has beliefs and conviction, and has done what he thought he should do in order to keep our country safe. Obama has polls, and that is all that matters to him.

I'm not sure how much Neo-Conservativism is really going to be an issue in this election. Obama will run on change, McCain on reform - Palin and Biden will be attack dogs. The issues won't matter. To be perfectly honest, it would appear that how people feel about how their candidate is doing in the polls has more of an effect on the polls than the issues. Or am I seeing this wrong?

Do people want an alternative to Bush? Yes. But Independents and Conservatives simply do not see Senator Obama as a good alternative. At the end of the day, if McCain doesn't alienate the Right and continues reaching out to the Left, he could pull this off. The Libertarians have botched their campaign, so its not like Bob Barr is going to pull that many votes from McCain. Obama has got the Right in an uproar and they're out for blood. They'll definitely show up on election day.

I agree, things are hardly being decided on issues, which is quite sad. They are so different in their views for the country its ridicoulous. And Obama's ideas stick out to me like a sore thumb. These ideas are detrimental to us.

Bush gets a bad rap in my opinion, mainly because he's been an awful communicator. He's grown the economy significantly in the last 8 years, had record low unemployment for almost 8 years, he's prevented any further attacks on the US after a completely depleted defense departement following the Clinton years, is creating democracy in a nation once deamed as a mortal enemy, many nations fear Bush as a leader (which is a good thing, who gives a shit what European nations think of us, they didn't after we saved their asses in WWII), and has continued to make every effort he can to make us a safer country (other than illegal immigration).

What won't happen if Obama gets elected: He won't draw troops out of Iraq in a stable condition until he has to, he won't get universal healthcare to pass no matter what, because we know how much of a debauchery it will be, he won't even raise taxes on the rich until there are signs of a completly stable economy. He won't guarentee the right of abortion (never has been a presidents decision, rather it is the decision of the Supreme Court judges), he won't make gay marriage legal (see before statement), and he won't do much of anything good for our country, but he will go talk to Putin and get mauled.

Bush has expanded Government more than he has the Economy. Nuff said about Bush. That's the problem McCain is going to have to overcome if he wants to get elected. He has to make people confident that he will not continue this insane empowerment of the federal government and, frankly, McCain is going to have to lie on this issue if he wants to get elected.

McCain doesn't have to lie about a thing. He's been hard on government spending forever, and has based his campaign on it. Bush has been a huge spender, but McCain, other than supporting being victorious in Iraq and Afghanistan, has always been against ridiculous govt spending. Obama will increase govt spending 100000000000 fold, its not even funny.

You guys are completely missing the issue about Bush!

    Look here -

That right there, is the WHOLE PROBLEM!!!

He did what he thought he should do - in spite of direct and specific orders to the contrary!!!

What Bush did, is ILLEGAL!!! It's illegal, and un-Constitutional.

What Bush did to the economy, DOESN'T MATTER! What Bush did in Iraq, DOESN'T MATTER! None of that matters -

    The ISSUE, is this:

George W Bush ABUSED HIS CONSTITUTIONAL POWERS, and our Congress let him get away with it!!!

And he did that, primarily, by LYING TO THE PEOPLE!!! He lied to EVERYONE - he lied to Congress, to the United Nations, and even directly to the American People on national television!!!

And you goddam idiot Republi-Cons stood UP for this crap! You not only LET him do it, you CHEERED HIM ON!!!

And YOU, of all people, being CONSERVATIVES, should be screaming bloody murder about the growth of government, the abuse of power, the pissing away of money, ....

But instead, all I hear is, "aw, poor Bushie, give the guy a break".

    NO!!!

Bush is an EVIL FUCKING MENACE, he's a menace to ALL the People of the United States, and it is NOT acceptable for you or anyone else, to say, "give the guy a break".

If YOU don't do something about that kind of thing, RIGHT NOW, it's just going to happen again. And again. And again. If not now, then four years from now. Or eight. Or twelve. And the longer you let it go on, the harder it's going to be to stop and correct!

Please, do not SPEAK to me about the economy.

Speak to me, about a President who is aware of his Constitutional limits, and ABIDES BY THEM.

I do not give a rat's ass about George Bush's viewpoints on the "issues". What I care about, is that he adhere to his JOB, and his JOB DESCRIPTION, and not magically invent new Powers for himself whenever it pleases him. That rotten bastard has at least NINE constitutional violations that I know of SO FAR, and there's still two months to go.

So please, before you PROMISE me more stuff you can't deliver, why don't you take RESPONSIBILITY for this monstrous evil that you've wrought upon this great country in the name of "winning", and TAKE STEPS TO CORRECT IT.

Don't you DARE blow smoke up my ass about how great John McCain is going to be. What I want to KNOW is, how he's going to FIX what that idiot Bush has destroyed during the last eight years.

Jesus H Christ. The worst mistake you can make in the whole entire world, is to ignore the anger at George W Bush. Because everyone who does that, is part of the problem. And if you're not angry at what's going on these days, you are ASLEEP!!!

I would disagree. I think "his biggest obstacle in this campaign" is simply the color of his skin.

"Obama is still not way ahead of McCain in the polls is a remarkable failure for the Obama Campaign."

No. It's remarkable failure of the American People to finally overcome racial prejudice in this country. We have come a long way since the 1960's but to pretend that Obama's color is not the "800 lb gorilla in the room" this election is pure BS.

    Nons,

No, you are missing the point. Bush asked for and received special war powers from the congress. He executed those powers to protect the country. His efforts appear to have succeeded. People like a winner. Obama is fading and McCain is rising because the people don't know about neo-cons or the nitpicks of whether Bush exceeded his war powers. No, they don't like Bush. But now it's more a matter of convention. He's a mumble mouth. People died. Aren't I supposed to hate him?

But the policies have basically worked. People feel secure. The fact that McCain would continue that level of protection does not hurt him.
