    Re: Automatic weapons

They are legal. Licensing requirements are stiff and expensive but one can own a fully auto weapon.

(N2) May machine guns be transferred from one registered owner to another? [Back]
Yes. If the machine gun was lawfully registered and possessed before May 19, 1986, it may be transferred pursuant to an approved ATF Form 4.
    [18 U.S.C. 922(o)(2), 26 U.S.C. 5812]

The more appropriate question is why would a civilian need a full auto capable firearm?

Because the bad guys have them and you want to match their firepower. As the saying goes, "Only an idiot brings a knife to a gunfight."

    The question is, why not.

A few friends and my self had collectors licenses, we could and did own fully auto weapons, this is when I lived in SLC, I lived there for 23 years, anyway it was a fun way to spend the afternoon. I quit updating my license when I got into hang gliding. Who knows one day I might get it back.

No, it doesn't. Your question referenced government employees and I tailored my response accordingly. It doesn't define why a civilian would need a full auto weapon.

Because the bad guys (government) have them and you want to match their firepower. As the saying goes, "Only an idiot brings a knife to a gunfight."
