We are the government.

Through action, inaction, votes and non-votes..

Through speaking our minds and not speaking them...

We have created this government. It is ours.

A great many of us just want the government to defend our freedom and nothing else.

A great many of us want the government to take care of us when we are in need.

Our government is a compromise between those two views.

thats convenient and has a nice ring to it but its not true. Its a fluke of circumstance we were born into an existing democracy, and even collectively it would take a huge effort to change any significant part of it. Look how hard even campaign finance reform has been, yet you ask any Joe on the street and they will tell you it needs to be done - its almost unanimous in the popular opinion. It was the same 10 years ago.
