Thread: About that airplane "sold" on E-Bay.

It sure made a good story, didn't it? Hell, I was impressed by it, and I'm not even a republican. I didn't really think much more about it, except that I heard that line picked up by several other sources in a positive way. But here's what the Chicago Tribune had to say:

Funny how those attractive stories always seem to turn out to be "not quite true," eh?

Funny you should mention that...but the fact remains that this particular lie has all republican roots. Particularly ironic in light of the fact that the former CEO of EBay had spoken earlier in the evening.

She did put in on Ebay. It just didn't sell on Ebay. The minimum wasn't met. I think the fact that she really did put it on Ebay was pretty fucking cool.

All she said was that she 'put it on Ebay.' She didn't say 'I sold it on Ebay.'

It is cool. Did she say it sold on Ebay... or she put it on ebay? Because if she said the latter then she didn't lie.

She didn't lie. She said she put it on ebay... and she did. The Chicago Tribune is practicing "drive-by" reporting.

What is the problem here? Your article states:

"That luxury jet was over the top," Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. "I put it on eBay."

Palin's statement implied the plane was sold through the online auction site revered for empowering millions of small entrepreneurs, and Palin's spokeswoman insisted Thursday that the transaction occurred. But the plane failed to sell on eBay.

How does one saying, I put it on ebay, imply that it was sold there? The answer is, it doesn't.

From the NYT of all places:

In December, barely a week after being inaugurated, Ms. Palin said the plane would be sold on eBay. One serious offer was posted, for a similar price, but the deal fell apart when the state hesitated on the terms and the prospective buyer found another jet, said Dan Spencer, director of administrative services for the Public Safety Department.

Mr. Reynolds learned of the plane through Speaker John L. Harris, Republican of Valdez, Mr. Spencer said.



“He picked it up this morning,” Mr. Spencer said yesterday. “He had a couple of pilots.”


Ms. Palin said in a statement: “If the Department of Public Safety decides at a future date that it needs another aircraft, we will invest in something more sensible that can land on Alaska’s rural airstrips. Any purchase, if deemed necessary, will go through the normal legislative budget process.”

It seems to me that she did put the plane on ebay.
