Mexican military holds up U.S. Border Patrol at gunpoint

Border patrol agent held at gunpoint

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint Sunday night by members of the Mexican military who had crossed the border into Arizona, but the soldiers returned to Mexico without incident when backup agents responded to assist.

Agents assigned to the Border Patrol station at Ajo, Ariz., said the Mexican soldiers crossed the international border in an isolated area about 100 miles southwest of Tucson and pointed rifles at the agent, who was not identified.

It was unclear what the soldiers were doing in the United States, but U.S. law enforcement authorities have long said that current and former Mexican military personnel have been hired to protect drug and migrant smugglers.

"Unfortunately, this sort of behavior by Mexican military personnel has been going on for years," union Local 2544 of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) said on its Web page. "They are never held accountable, and the United States government will undoubtedly brush this off as another case of 'Oh well, they didn't know they were in the United States.'

"It is fortunate that this incident didn't end in a very ugly gunfight," said the local's posting.

The NBPC represents all nonsupervisory personnel among the agency's 16,000 agents.

Border Patrol spokesman Michael Friel did not return calls for comment Tuesday.

State Department spokeswoman Nicole Thompson said Tuesday that the department had no information on the incident, and referred further questions to the Border Patrol. "It is not an incident that we are aware of," she said.

Ricardo Alday, spokesman at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, said Tuesday that Mexico and the United States are engaged in "an all-out struggle to deter criminal organizations from operating on both sides of our common border."

"Law enforcement operations have led, from time to time, to innocent incursions by both U.S. and Mexican law enforcement personnel and military units into the territory of both nations, and in particular along non-demarcated areas of our border," he said.
Can't wait for open borders with our friendly neighbors to the south...:sarcasm:

Over the years, there has been fault on both sides. But this should not be a reason for this discreet abuses. It's a good thing no one ended dead. But with little attention that this kind of situations get, this will happen again.

If there had been violence the government would have put OUR agents
in prison, and the media would have gone down there to film people
handing out water to poor Mexicans risking their lives to break our laws
so they could make a sympathy piece to lower "tensions".

Just give up and learn Spanish, the fix is in. Democrats need oppressed,
abused, people to vote for their rhetoric and Republicans want to use
    those people for cheap labor.

    INVADE MEXICO!

    "Operation Free Tequila"

Gather up all the illegals and march them in a "human fence" followed by US troops. Draw a straight line from Brownsville, TX to Los Mochis on the western coast. Have the illegals build the fence along that line. It will be much shorter than what we are attempting now. While we are at it, we also should take back the Baja Peninsula but make it part of Arizona.

With the land we aquire, we can build all the wind, solar, and nuclear plants we need to power US needs. If there is any oil there, drill the crap out of the land.

I have grown tired of Mexico using the US as a waste dump for their population and disrespecting our borders. Let's return the favor and see how they like it for a change.

None of this would have happened if Tom Ridge and his huge staff of useless government workers would have started building fences instead of making pretty colored boxes telling how scared we should be. And just what the fuck were we supposed to do about heightened alerts? Get paranoid? Give Arab looking people dirty looks and spy on them?

The Government can't do anything about immigration until they build the fence. All of the Texans between El Paso and Brownsville putting up a fuss need to be told about eminent domain, and if that doesn't apply declare martial law and pay em' fair market for the land they loose. Then increase the amount of people who are working on the fence so it's done in two years or less.

Only when the fence is done will all this catterwalling about illegal imigration be anything more than wasted air. Because right now what happens with our raids, they break up the illegal's families, jail the owners of the business, and close the buisiness de-employing legal workers too, crippling entire towns if they rely on that business, then the illegals sneak back in over the border and find another illegal job in a town somewhere else. Which is exactly what happens I guarantee it.

What bubble do you live in? Mexicans have been crossing into our country for a long time. Illegal immigration increased dramatically in the 1990's. I am not sure how the Governor of PA had much authority to build a fence in TX. Please enlighten us all. Maybe we should ask the POTUS in the 1990's what he did to stem the tide.

The DHS was not even created until 2003. Ridge served for two years. It took us two years of talking about building a fence before we even decided we should do it.

We don't seem to think it is a very serious problem, I guess. The fact that more Americans are killed by illegals each year than the death toll for the entire Iraq war doesn't seem to matter.

I defer to my earlier post. INVADE MEXICO! Make the fence a lot shorter by straightening out the border and have the illegals build it.
