9 to nothing and still not RW support of the troops

Nine Democratic senators introduced a bill Tuesday to force the Department of Veterans Affairs to offer voter registration services to former soldiers living at VA facilities, which the agency has rejected as being too partisan and interfering with their medical mission.
The bill's lead sponsors, Senators Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and John Kerry, D-Mass., have been urging the VA for several years to be a voter registration agency like state motor vehicle departments, where government employees ask the public if they are registered to vote and would like assistance to do so. Under current VA policy, the responsibility to register to vote lies with the former soldiers, who, like all voters, must update their voter registration information any time they change residence.
The other seven senators co-sponsoring the "Veterans Voting Support Act" are Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.

Nine Senators, Including Obama, Introduce Bill to Help Vets Register to Vote | Democracy and Elections | AlterNet

Now this is the alternet which while not a perfect source has a pretty good record but could it be true that the GOP has not one member of the gvt who supports inclusion for wounded bed-ridden vets? I mean the CONs lover to claim they "support the troops" be it on a bumpersticker or lawn sign or flag pin but it does seem that when push comes to shove they tend to leave them hanging more often then not.

Need better access to education? Forget about it! Need more beds in the VA hospitals? Forget about it. Need access to VA support? Forget about it! Mental health help? Nope aint gonna happen. Help with reacclimation so you don't end up one of thousands of homeless vets? Hope you like that comfy box under the bridge! Want to vote but have no arms or legs? Touch luck there buuuuddddy.

So where is that much ballyhooed suppoort? Where is that patriotism you all love to hit us over the head with while claiming that any veteran group that does not support your version of the truth does not support the troops? Now I won't say that ALL righties are all for forgetting the troops but it sure as hell seems like your leadership has.

Need links showing Republicans voted no on these things.

And voter registration isn't the job of a hospital. The Dems just see a
target group of people they can exploit for anti war votes. If their so
damn concerned about the Vets why argue over this and ignore all the
    other problems you listed?

Well then, you should support the idea of making recruiting stations voter registration offices too!

In fact, I demand that voter registration be made a mandatory requirement for enlistment.

Gosh. I wonder what the overwhelming party affiliation for the recruits would be? just a guess, but I'll bet Obama wouldn't support this idea.

By a vote of 75-22, the Senate approved an expanded version of the GI bill today. Proposed by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., it's the biggest expansion of the bill in the past quarter-century, according to the New York Times. But it has also been opposed by, among others, President Bush and presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.'

He maintained that budget cuts include "a $350 million reduction in veterans home funding, which wipes out at least 5,000 veterans' nursing home beds."
"If the president's proposed budget cuts are enacted, nearly 60 percent of the 1,600 veterans will lose their daily stipend that allows them to stay in our state's nursing homes, literally forcing them out into the cold."

Well pick any of the three possibilities but the last, my knowledge, analytical skills and wisdom certainly embrace any of the first two suggested topics.

The first is of particular interest, since I enjoy discussing myths, and the delusions of my mental inferiors.

I shall defer to your experience with the last possibility.

With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan far from over, President Bush is threatening to veto a bill that would pay tuition and other expenses at a four-year public university for anyone who has served in the military for at least three years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. A main reason is the fear that it would hasten an exodus from the ranks.
The issue has created a political conundrum for a president who has often gone to great lengths to show support for the troops.

Oh come on. Don't point out the obvious. The obvious gives the liberals headaches and they get all teary-eyed and irritable. I hate it when they do that.

I say go for it - make recruitment offices voter registration centres.

Or, better yet, just do it the sensible way and register everyone to vote.
