"One of every four California students drops out"

Another wonderful example of government education; and it's no coincidence that this is happening in Calexico, where liberalism rules the agenda.

A new statewide count of high school dropouts, based on the tracking of individual students, shows significantly higher numbers than have been reported for years in California.

The dropout report, released Wednesday by the California Department of Education, estimated that one in four high school students - 24.2 percent - failed to graduate with their classes or move into another educational program to continue their high school education. The estimates were derived from data from the 2006-07 school year.

By contrast, the state claimed a 13.9 percent four-year dropout rate for the prior year.

Nice, and it gets better too.

The difference is due to a more accurate system for keeping track of students, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said. Under the new system, students across California were given a unique identification number that enabled the state to better track their whereabouts in the education system.

Mr. O'Connell is trying to tell us that the increase in drop-outs has nothing to do with falling education standards, but with the system of accounting for high school drop-outs. He doesn't even allow any room for falling education standards, pinning the problem on a "system" instead.

It's bad enough when the evidence points to a horrible education system, but when the Superintendent of Public Instruction brushes the numbers off with a citation of a new system? Absolutely comical.

Seriously, though, these are some scary numbers.

Who did you expect a response from? Do you think that those who want to send every person to college free of charge to want to respond. They would have to admit that they are dead wrong.

Government schools serve their purpose... as socialist propaganda mills. Education is not their goal.

Great point, I shouldn't have expected too much out of our socialist education supporters on here.

Well said, and in Illinois the education is getting really bad, and we have a socialist at the helm here in Illinois, Gov. Rod Blagoveich. Perhaps one of the worst, if not the worst governor we have ever had. Raising taxes, spending out of control, man, the fees in the state are so high now that if a park ranger catches you without a fishing license you could be paying a $200 fine. $200 just for fishing without a license! And increased fees, an expanded lottery, and state-run casinos are his answer to the deficit crisis. What a solution!

Illinois has had a bad run of governors lately, with the socialist in office now, a crook in George Ryan, both for too many years. The last good governor was Jim Edgar, but I fear those days are over in Illinois.

What's too debate C? You posted an article about "Calexico's" drop out rate. Is that supposed to be impressive? Why not compare all the states? California falls right in the middle.

This is no child left behind. That fuck Bush doubled the spending and doubled the drop out rate. Way to go Bush, I see things are going as planned, plenty of fodder for your and Obama's wars.

2002-03? Just a wee bit outdated isn't it? Considering how Calexico's dropout rate went up by about 10% in one year.

I don't understand your point though. Are you trying to tell me that it's not all that bad that one in four high schoolers drop out in California because things are worse in other states?

No doubt about that, seeing how that piece of trash was authored by Ted Kennedy, and foolishly signed by Bush. States do however shoulder their fair share of the blame. Local and state governments have a more direct impact on the education system that the federal level does, and oftentimes, funding for education from the fed goes straight to states who then decide to squander it.

If we went to a totally private system, it would be funny if liberal businesses started dominating the schools. With Apple K-12! what kid would want to go to Our Lady of Perpetual Guilt?

Your wrong, Bush twisted Kennedy's arm. NCLB was all Bush...all Bush.
