This stuff was left from before 1991. Everyone was aware of it for ages and it was basically just a pile of unprocessed uranium. Anyone going to think Niger is a nuclear threat? Its lying around on the ground there...

I hope that you accept my apology Six.....Two different yet simular stories. This stuff was there a long time however, and it seems that it was purchased before Israel hit the site. My sincere apology to you.

Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.

Just a theory here, feel free to stop me.

My immediate though is that this may have been why there was a need to discredit Plame and Wilson? Because the yellowcake debris was going to be the spin-story smoking gun somehow for our need to go into Iraq and oust Saddam, and they were poised to expose the lie?

The yellow cake was too well-documented by the IAEA reports from way back in the Butler era to make a long-term claim based on it. But come to think of it, they should have made a big song-and-dance about securing it, and it would have played reasonably well in the pro-war media at the time as "evidence" for public perceptions.
Instead they secured the oil fields and ignored the pile and there were fears it would be looted! Goes to show where the real priorities lay...

Meh. How is it a priority if it's " laying on the ground in Niger " ? Seems to be just as easily looted there.

Also, who were the oil fields secured for ? Definately not for us with gas being 4.00 a gallon. The old Dick Cheney war for oil song and dance just doesn't fit.
