    Genetically Modified Food

First off, a very brief introduction to the issue of GM (genetically modified) foods:
From About Genetically Modified Foods - Seeds of Deception

The biotech industry claims that the FDA has thoroughly evaluated GM foods and found them safe. This is untrue. Internal FDA documents made public from a lawsuit, reveal that agency scientists warned that GM foods might create toxins, allergies, nutritional problems, and new diseases that might be difficult to identify. Although they urged their superiors to require long-term tests on each GM variety prior to approval, the political appointees at the agency, including a former attorney for Monsanto, ignored the scientists. Official policy claims that the foods are no different and do NOT require safety testing. A manufacturer can introduce a GM food without even informing the government or consumers. A January 2001 report from an expert panel of the Royal Society of Canada said it was "scientifically unjustifiable" to presume that GM foods are safe. Likewise, a 2002 report by the UK's Royal Society said that genetic modification "could lead to unpredicted harmful changes in the nutritional state of foods," and recommended that potential health effects of GM foods be rigorously researched before being fed to pregnant or breast-feeding women, elderly people, those suffering from chronic disease, and babies.

How could the government approve dangerous foods? A close examination reveals that industry manipulation and political collusion--not sound science--was the driving force.

In this light is probable that both key government officials and certain people in the corporate world are guilty of criminal malfeasance?

I would say yes. What do you think?

the appropriate people should be held accountable. Unfortunately this hurts the regulatory agency because it is a much needed agency, though others will argue otherwise. Then again, I can't question the article/site because I can't pull it up on campus for some reason.

I recently read about a man who developed a form of genetically engineered rice that was capable of growing in arid climates normally unsuitable for any crop. Not only that, each grain of rice is imbued with various vitamins and supplements not available from other regional sources.

Countless hundreds of millions of lives were saved.

I'm big on careful testing, but I see no malfeasance. Man has been altering the genes of plants and livestock one way or another since the dawn of agriculture.

Yeah, but did it taste like shit? That's my biggest complaint with GM food, they go for longer shelf life, disease resistant, doesn't bruise, bigger yield, etc. then suck all the taste genes out of it. I suppose I should be grateful I can get tomatoes all year long at a reasonable price, but who wants to eat them when they are tasteless?

Maybe someone needs to invent a sliced tomato that is made out of tomato sauce in a mold - kind of like Pringle's potato chips. Then at least they could add artificial flavoring and sugar to give it a little pizazz.

I also have issues with the property rights these seed companies like Monsanto are enforcing.

I think they have more patent attorneys in their R&D department than they do agricultural scientists.
