One thing I find interesting is how very often the debate over illegal immigration tends to focus on how to deal with illegal immigrants, and not so much about dealing with what is causing these people to both leave their own country and enter the country they do, even knowing it is illegal.
If things weren't quite so bad in their own country -- or if there weren't people waiting at their destination ready to wink and nod at their entry because, hey, cheap labor that can't kick up too much of a fuss -- then I would think that would do at least as much to stem illegal immigration as making the legal/enforcement barriers higher.
