Congress Mandates "Poison" for every American Home

Congress Mandates "Poison" for every American Home watch!

brasschecktv.com — A "green" energy-saving light bulb that is so full of toxic mercury, you're advised to leave your home if it ever breaks! But it gets better. Come 2012, you will required BY LAW to use light bulbs of this type. To put the cherry on top, there's only one place in the world that manufactures them: China.

Man, I thought from the title of the thread that all Americans were going to be forced to listen to Bret Michaels.

However, the level of mercury in bulbs is very, very much lower than what people would expect, and how often do you actually break a lightbulb?

By the way, you are confusing ethyl mercury with methyl mercury.

Re: Congress Mandates "Poison" for every American Home

As I mentioned in another thread, the battery in your wristwatch contains 5x the mercury levels of one CFL bulb. And that's a number dating back to 2005 or so... All CFL manufacturers are researching ways to lower mercury levels.

If you do break a CFL bulb, here's how you clean it up:

    1) Pick up the glass, and discard it carefully. Broken glass is always dangerous, CFL or not.
    2) Take two paper towels, fold them in half two or three times. Dampen them with tap water. Don't soak them.
    3) Use the paper towels to blot/mop the floor (or carpet). This will pick up minute glass splinters, and any mercury.
    4) Discard the paper towels in a garbage pail that kids aren't likely to start rummaging through.
    5) Repeat steps 2-4 two or three times.

If it's on a carpet, don't use an electric vacuum on the surface until you've gone through the above steps. The near-microscopic droplets of mercury on the carpet are pretty harmless. However, the vacuum will break up the droplets, potentially spraying them into the air. This isn't necessary a "dangerous" situation, but it's worth avoiding.

I guess I won't tell anyone that I have four ounces of liquid mercury in a bottle at home, not if you guys are freaking out over light bulbs...

Finally some on fucking gets it. This is all about control, not light bulbs.

Oh BTW if you want to be a REAL TERRORIST stock up on bulbs now, soon you will not get them.

You must have shat some serious bricks when the government started banning the sale of leaded gasoline.

Re: Congress Mandates "Poison" for every American Home

Um... that's not a very convincing link, given that there are actual news stories about this issue:

CFL Bulbs Have One Hitch: Toxic Mercury
Fluorescent Lights' Mercury Poses Dim Threat
The shape of lights to come? Not everyone's buying it

And if you think the amount of mercury in a CFL is a threat to your home, you better pray that you don't have any old-school mercury thermometers around, because those things are nuclear weapons in comparison. Not to mention, say, government-mandated smoke detectors that run off a radioactive source?

    Oh noes!

I *will* agree, however, that a flat-out government mandate seems silly. The sort of government incentives I've seen (at least in California, where you can get CFLs cheaper than regular incandescent bulbs and they last a heckuva lot longer) should be quite sufficient over time, I'd think.
