US Rep John Murtha for smearing him. The Marine that's contemplating the suit was the highest ranking Marine in the Haditha "murder" courts martial.
I sure hope this comes about.

I would love Murtha to have to answer to his reckless words. I will gladly contribute money to the legal efforts of these Marines if they pursue litigation agains corrupt John Murtha.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani, who is mulling suing Rep. Murtha, did indeed have charges dropped. The charges were dropped because of mishandling of the case by the officer pressing charges, Lt. Gen. James Mattis:

Folsom ruled that Mattis acted wrongly in allowing Col. John Ewers, a subordinate who helped investigate Chessani and thus became a potential witness for the prosecution, to join deliberations about whether to file charges in the case. Folsom said the general created a real or perceived conflict of interest by doing so.

Still, it is sad that Rep. Murtha would lower himself to the standards of the Bush Administration by treating accusation as fact. Just because you accuse someone of being a terrorist doesn't mean they are a terrorist; likewise, just because a soldier is accused of reckless or deliberate actions against civilians doesn't mean it is so.

Eh? The last time I checked, civilian courts also get sarcastic about potential conflicts of interest -- they tend to be case-enders.
