Local Lanier plans to seal off rough ’hoods in latest effort to stop wave of violence

    WASHINGTON -

D.C. police will seal off entire neighborhoods, set up checkpoints and kick out strangers under a new program that D.C. officials hope will help them rescue the city from its out-of-control violence.

Under an executive order expected to be announced today, police Chief Cathy L. Lanier will have the authority to designate “Neighborhood Safety Zones.” At least six officers will man cordons around those zones and demand identification from people coming in and out of them. Anyone who doesn’t live there, work there or have “legitimate reason” to be there will be sent away or face arrest, documents obtained by The Examiner show.

Lanier has been struggling to reverse D.C.’s spiraling crime rate but has been forced by public outcry to scale back several initiatives including her “All Hands on Deck” weekends and plans for warrantless, door-to-door searches for drugs and guns.

Under today’s proposal, the no-go zones will last up to 10 days, according to internal police documents. Front-line officers are already being signed up for training on running the blue curtains.

Peter Nickles, the city’s interim attorney general, said the quarantine would have “a narrow focus.”
“This is a very targeted program that has been used in other cities,” Nickles told The Examiner. “I’m not worried about the constitutionality of it.”

Others are. Kristopher Baumann, chairman of the D.C. police union and a former lawyer, called the checkpoint proposal “breathtaking.”

Shelley Broderick, president of the D.C.-area American Civil Liberties Union and the dean of the University of the District of Columbia’s law school, said the plan was “cockamamie.”

“I think they tried this in Russia and it failed,” she said. “It’s just our experience in this city that we always end up targeting poor people and people of color, and we treat the kids coming home from choir practice the same as we treat those kids who are selling drugs.”

The proposal has the provisional support of D.C. Councilman Harry “Tommy” Thomas, D-Ward 5, whose ward has become a war zone.

“They’re really going to crack down on what we believe to be a systemic problem with open-air drug markets,” Thomas told The Examiner.

Thomas said, though, that he worried about D.C. “moving towards a police state.”

How long before this insanity spreads across the nation? Nice test of martial law close to home for our D.C. lawmakers though. Say hello to America's future.

Our government is slowly turning all us of into the meat in frog soup. I just wonder if all the idiotic sheep will realize it in time? But they probably won't because the government says it's for their own good. :sarcasm:

There was a thread posted on this the other day. Some people were actually defending this. Why? I don't know. I guess they don't mind living in a police state, but I do. It is quite disturbing that this is happening. One of the freedoms we are still able to enjoy is movement. But by the looks of things, that will be gone too.

They have to start on a small scale level such as this. They just want to give the people time to adapt.

That's called "frog soup." You see, if you put a frog in hot water, it will jump out immediately. But if you put it in cold water and turn up the heat slowly, it will cook to death. Well, in case people haven't noticed, it's getting awfully hot in here.

Anyone who doesn't see a problem with martial law and trading away their rights for the illusions of comfort doesn't deserve the freedoms they enjoy which so many have died for. I truly hate these people.

Oh my God, another innovative effort at reducing crime in a targeted neighborhood. How shameful. We can't have the gestapoesque DCPD actually taking proactive steps to reduce crime. How dare they actually do their jobs and act to protect the public. (Sarcasm very much intended)

    Good for the DCPD!

Why not ask the people this program is designed to protect how they feel about the extra level of protection. I'll just bet they applaud any action to reduce crime in their ward.

And in case you haven't heard, gated communities with controlled access have sprung up all across this country.

There are ways to reduce crime without having to take these types of measures. This is a police state, no matter which way you try to spin it. Gated communities do not have police officers controlling them. They are private. And tell me, how much force will be used exactly? What is acceptable?

Its interesting that D.C has one of the strictest gun control laws, yet they still have so much violence. I wonder why? :whistling:

These are American citizens, whose own money pays for the streets we live on, and now they will be told where they can and cannot go. But who cares, this is all in the name of safety. No one is ever 100% safe. We take risks everyday of our lives, and the shenanigans being pulled by the police are not justified. It is disturbing to see people continually advocate the empowerment of government.

The difference is that one keeps people out while this plan keeps people in.

You think voluntarily living in a gated community is the equivalent of martial law? Where the fuck do you come up with this "logic?" Un-Fucking-Believable.

People like you truly make me ill. It sickens me that some people have sacrificed everything for something you readily give away, it really does. You truly are a politician's wet dream.

What short sighted sheep always forget to realize is that by the time the government finally comes for them, there will be no one left to save them. This is the lesson that history teaches us over and over again yet most people are simply too stupid to figure it out. It's like a 40 year old man who still hasn't figured out the pattern of the sun rising every morning and setting every evening.

You truly deserve neither liberty nor comfort. You really don't. I can only hope that when you finally get what you deserve it's limited to people just like you, people who disgrace the name of every fallen soldier who ever fought for this nation.
