The late crew and I have taken to discussing this on the regular. One of them has a cabin with a well and some land. I don't really have anything here, so I'm going to be assisting him and his family, along with a few others.

Well sir, I cannot afford to pay the kind of taxes to own that type of land. In fact, with taxes being the way they are, sir, I don't feel that it is really possible for me to actually own land. And, even if I had a whole arsenal, would that stop the looters in my own government from taking it from me through force? Indeed, I think not.

When the shitpickle hits the sheets, the government will be plenty busy dismantling itself. Outside of urban centers, you'll have little to fear from them. Guns will stop nefarious types who are angry that their god didn't whisk them away from all the suffering and wish to claim imminent domain over you and yours, however.
