Christian Teen Arrested for "Hate Crime"

CHRISTIAN TEEN ARRESTED FOR "HATE CRIME" | NPN Email Alert

The police department of Champaign, Illinois is reported to be under pressure from higher authorities to increase its quota of hate crimes convictions. Brett Van Asdlen, an 18 year-old Christian college student on a baseball scholarship, didn’t know this. On April 12 he and a friend saw two homosexuals leaning on each other and holding hands, walking toward them on the sidewalk. “Look at those two guys holding hands,” Brett said to his friend and walked past them. According to Brett’s mother, the next thing he knew, one of the homosexuals (whom he perceived to be drunk) had grabbed him by the shoulder, putting his face up to Brett’s and repeatedly shouting, “What did you say?” Brett told him to go away several times and then pushed him. The homosexual fell over backwards. On his back, the homosexual told his partner to call the police. In eight minutes, four officers arrived. Two interviewed Brett and his friend and assured them there would be no problem. Brett had been physically accosted and detained, clearly an assault. The other two officers interviewed the homosexual, who was taken to the hospital.

Brett was arrested for violation of the Illinois hate crimes law, a Class 4 felony. The penalty can be as much as 3 years in prison.

The homosexual and public media in the Champaign area are now in hue and cry to convict Brett. Homosexual groups are publishing articles against him in their media and on the internet. (See, Illinoishomepage.net - Hate Crime in Champaign) They have posted his address on the internet. Homosexuals are now picketing on the street where this alleged hate crime occurred.

The athletic director at Brett’s college, fearing bad publicity, has removed him from the baseball team. Brett’s arraignment and possible indictment is scheduled for May 6. NOW is the time to protest, not after the D.A. has committed the city to a hate crimes prosecution. Every lover of freedom should call the following authorities and say:

"I protest the arraignment of Brett Van Asdlen on trumped-up ‘hate crime’ charges. Please do your best to see that he is released immediately. Thank you."

Call: Mayor Gerald Schweighart at (217)403-8720, Chief of Police R.T. Finney at (217) 403-6911, and District Attorney Julia Rietz at (217) 348-3733.

Good on you for linking to the other side of the story. 3 years seems a bit much - what does assault usually go for? And does this guy have witnesses - sounds like the gay guy has several.

CHAMPAIGN- Emotional words from the victim of a hate crime. It happened on Green street in Champaign just after one in the morning on Saturday. Police arrested Brett Vanasdlen and he was in court Monday. They say he made comments about the student being gay and then pushed him to the ground.
Steven Velasquez is a student at the U of I. He was walking with friends when he says he was attacked for his sexual orientation. He says in this day and age he couldn't believe this could happen and even worse on campus where he thought he was safe.
"My comment was 'How ignorant was that' and then I was just pulled back and that's all I remember," It happened so fast.. Steven Velasquez has trouble remembering the details.
He was walking down Green street with two girls and another guy when a man started yelling at them for being gay. "It upset me so much that he had no idea who I was, I didn't even try to stick up for myself, I ignored him to go on with his action and throw me to the ground it was such a shock."
Sitting with friends now, the whole thing seems unbelievable.
Amy Snyder, his best friend, is trying to be there for him, "It's one of those fears that you just don't talk about that there is hate in the world, that you're okay being who you are and when that actually happened it was just earth shattering."
Velasquez has struggled coming to terms with his sexual orientation, telling friends and hoping for acceptance but this is something he had never imagined.
"I started thinking, wow I'm gay and I can't even embrace that to my family and for someone to take that out on me and push me to the ground and injure me, it just makes me not want to come out to my family because you don't know who's out there, you don't know who is going to react the way that guy reacted."
He's shaken up but taking a stand ready to press charges. It's not going to be easy but he won't let this go un-noticed.
"Yes this happened but I have to move on I can't let it affect me because it will take over and inhibit my ability to embrace who I am." Velasquez was released from the hospital the following day Doctors say he was knocked out unconscious and suffered from some head trauma. The man arrested.. Brett Vanasdlen is charged with a hate crime. He's out on bond.

Spectacular post Defensor! I knew we would agree on something. If you pull the mask back and take a closer look at the hate crimes bill, it extends to speech or "culturally incorrect thoughts" What does that mean? "Rev" Wright could be imprisoned for speaking against homosexuality behind the pulpit in HIS church.

If hate were really a crime all the Lefties in America would be behind bars
for what they have said about Bush.

"Hate speech" laws, just like other "right think" constructs, are just ways
to attack who you want when you want.

More ridiculous laws. I love knowing that if I get killed, my life isn't worth as much under the law as a (insert minority here).

This hate crime stuff is not a two way street. Maybe the homosexual hates straight people. Who is to say who hates who? What should matter is who assaulted who first. That will only come out in a court case.

I have heard many say that blacks and gays cannot be convicted of a hate crime, that it can only go the other way!! Well then there is a law that is racist and sexist.

Who said what- who did what- its all the same stupid shit that goes on
millions of times every day. People have a go at each other, somebody
may be guilty of assault. Nobody should be going away for three years.

"Thought crimes" are an abomination of twisted socialist Lefties making
    laws.

As expected, mainstream media turns this whole event into an emotional lamentation over the poor innocent homosexuals. :dramaqueen:

Doesn't even pretend to be concerned with facts... "Steven Velasquez has trouble remembering the details. He's shaken up but taking a stand ready to press charges."

Why doesn't the MSM examine the alleged "hater"'s side?

That's the problem with making some people "more equal" under the law than others. The law itself has an assumption of guilt built-in for non-protected class members. Hate crime laws are blatantly unconstitutional.

Because homos are a "protected minority". Geez, they treat them like an endangered species or some crap!

Yeah, he can't remember the details because he was wasted.
